"Definitely exceeded our expectations in terms of food and service. The course was $125/person + $85 for the fish, so not cheap, but definitely worth it! The main dish and our favorite for the evening was the Sichuan cod. Absolutely delicious - cook to perfection with such buttery fish meat and crispy skin. The restaurant is also very accommodating for dietary restrictions. Service is attentive. Loved the ambiance. Would 100% come back."
"definitely not for everyone but so glad we came. After reading the cookbook and Brandon Jew’s story we could appreciate the food even more. What I enjoyed the most was seeing all those familiar traditional Chinese ingredients being respected and presented in the most creative ways. Do I prefer the soy milk burrata over a regular one? No. Do I prefer the supreme broth over my moms chicken soup? No. But it’s the idea behind the dishes, the choices of ingredients, that touched and delighted me. But if I wasn’t Chinese or didn’t recognize any of the ingredients, I wouldn’t necessarily have found the flavors to be that impressive. The waitress was so sweet and kind. Really nice vibe too. Only thing was most of the dishes were too salty for us. But otherwise we really liked the concept and seeing Chinese food presented in such a modern fusion way all the while respecting the ingredients and traditions."
"The food here is incredible and met all of our expectations. The sauces are delicious, the textures are wonderful, and the meat is cooked perfectly. The place features a rotating 5 course Prix Fixe menu that uses seasonal ingredients. Thankfully ours had lots of seafood including ling cod, halibut, and scallop and pork dumplings. We had a party of three and all found the meal filling and worth every penny. We attempted to share the Peking Duck, but found that a larger party would be necessary to finish it. Thankfully the duck can be taken home and comes with re-heating instructions to help preserve quality. The sauce for the duck is what really makes the dish. Reservations are recommended, but I was able to make a same day reservation on a Wednesday at 8:00pm. There is also a bar area that serves some food as well, however I do not think you can get the full menu without a table. The drinks are great and they have a good wine selection. The Portsmouth Square Parking Garage is a block away and offers parking for an hourly fee, we usually park there when visiting. Definitely try this place if you want a delicious meal in Chinatown."
"The food was good but mediocre and not elevated and more traditional Chinese cuisine. The tasting menu featured heavy proteins and ginger flavor. The soup bao was uniquely huge but flavors lacked depth. The steamed fish was $99 and tasted no different than the $30-40 dishes you can order at nearby restaurants. The pacing for the night was poor for our small table of three. There were long awkward pauses, and it was a three hour affair. Service was very friendly and restaurant decor is beautiful."
"Brought the family here to celebrate a birthday. It is based in an historic Chinatown building. The service was fun and ambiance lively. They even gave us a little card for the birthday. We loved the modern cantonese cuisine with some western touches. Cocktails were balanced and tasty. The halibut “yusheng” was light and balanced by crunchy seeds. Among my favorites was the giant scallop and pork belly dumpling. The soup inside was delicious. Beef was well prepared and tender. We had the bass and duck for mains. These were executed well and came with elevated sides. Duck was served with pate and chewy pancakes. It was among the more meaty preparations we’ve had and had salty, smoky skin. Dessert was tasty as well."
