"I love my school, we are not learning terrorism. Our teachers are nice. So to all the adults yelling at the teachers, you aren't here all day every day. I am. And I love my school."
"Hi, I'm a student at SHMS and am currently in the 8th grade. I've seen a lot of these reviews that have been really negative and although I do agree with some of these opinions, there is one reoccurring topic that is very misinformed and honestly quite Islamophobic. As a student who has taken 7th grade social studies and passed on to the next grade, nothing about this school has ever made me feel like I've been forced to pick a religion ( aside from a few Christian students who need to mind their own business ). In fact the teachers and staff are strictly forbidden from promoting a particular religion or telling students what religion to believe in. In the classes we only spent one week studying Islam while we spent two studying Christianity which does seem a little unfair, but I digress. As someone who is broadly agnostic I have no preference for a particular religion, but I will not stand for the demonization of certain religious groups because of a small minority. In the 7th grade we learn about world history which means Europe, The Americas, Asia, Africa and all the customs, history, and religions that come with it. We are living in an informational golden age where we no longer have an excuse to not educate ourselves on such topics and need to stop living in our own little worlds and start thinking of the bigger picture. What kind of world do you want to leave for the next generation, one based on prejudice and hate, or one build on understanding and being educated. Anyways, this got a little ranty, but TL:DR No child is having a religion shoved down their throats and anyone that says differently has had their kid lie to them for a different reason ( such as not liking the teacher etc.), or has been incredibly misinformed, or has made their own baseless assumptions. Thank you for your time, sorry for writing an essay."
"Family environment. Never had any trouble from any of the kids my daughter hangs out with. High level of parent involvement. Only one teacher in 2 years turned out to be a disappointment. I find the curriculum to be challenging yet appropriate. Due to school re-zoning of the elementary school I had 2 children at Columbia Academy but my middle school student asked to remain at SHMS and we were satisfied enough to allow her to remain there until she goes to high school. I share in the concerns with others about the Islamic teachings but it's not isolated to this school. It's in all our schools across the country. This staff is simply teaching the curriculum given to them. Not all of them were happy about either but couldn't afford to loose their jobs over it. If you have a problem with the curriculum you need to start at a much higher level than the local school such as the district and federal levels. While your at it, get involved in the parent advisory board where you can make a difference. Our community, schools and teachers need our support to stay strong. Attack the issues not the people forced to follow. Go SHMS Generals!"
"SHMS has an excellent curriculum and wonderful teachers who are helpful and very active with there students. I recommend this school to any parent looking for a good middle school. The bad comments below are way over rated because as a student I know what actually happened. They didn't tell us to honor it they told us to hold any rude or extreme comments about the Islamic faith. SHMS is not recruiting anything. This is the best school to send your child to. Some parents just take things and exaggerate things to an extreme extent making our wonderful school sound like the worst thing to happen in Maury county."
"After 3 years I can give and honest account that this school is amazing. The staff and teachers are all engaged with the students. The community of learning here is unlike any other school. They are truly focused on the success of each student. As a former educator, I know this is the best school my children could attend."
