"”Dr Joel” treated me while I was inpatient for agoraphobia w/ panic attacks. I had to be deeply sedated in the back seat -- asleep -- while two friends drove me from Nashville to Memphis. I stayed for six weeks, and Dr Joel was such a help to me! His kindness, humor, and treatment of me as an equal (e.g. not condescending) put me completely at ease. I went from having to be asleep to get to him, to him driving me over bridges (over the Mississippi River!) (look up agoraphobia w/ panic attacks), to me driving myself over the same bridges, and to malls (and going inside), and all over Memphis (a city I wasn't familiar with), to being interviewed by two news stations and ”The Commercial Appeal, ” to speaking to hundreds of people at a symposium on agoraphobia, and ending with the hospital flying me home on a commercial jet! This was nearly 30 years ago, and I adore Dr Joel to this day. Since I am in Nashville, I haven't seen him since but I'd love to. He had a tremendous impact on me. I'll never forget him trusting me (a patient scared to death of driving due to panic attacks) to drive his Lexus -- completely alone. Then he rented me a car for the last 7 - 10 days that I was there, with open permission to leave the hospital whenever I wanted to do so. (With the exception of going to nightclubs, of course!) He treated me like a peer, and not as his inferior. (I was enrolled at a university studying to be a psychologist at the time, but I wasn't one yet!) He was the best mental health practitioner I’d ever met, and he remains so. All things considered, that's saying a lot. But it's definitely well deserved. God bless you, Dr Joel!"
