Reviews of Unum
"Unum is the ABSOLUTE WORST!!!! by the time you see any money that you're entitled to........its months later, with all the 5-6, 5-10, 10-15 business days for everything. I mean everything!!!! Meanwhile your bills are piling up! Ill be sure to opt out next enrollment. Worthless just Worthless, and your protocol apologies, and understanding my frustration dont do nothing for me!!! I need my money thst Iam entitled to, that I pay for!!!"
"Disgusting company. My wife is fighting them on maternity leave, which we were told would be covered by both Unum and HR from the company she works for. We had to submit the exact same paperwork countless times, and had the paperwork denied twice because of the most mundane clerical error from the OBGYN office. Despite the OBGYN providing a letter of necessity for medical leave we still had to fight to get it approved. Unum said they wouldn't know if she fully qualified for leave until the day it starts, which we were 99% sure we did but that 1% was so much unnecessary stress and completely uncalled for. After jumping through all the hoops while trying to prepare for labor we were told maternity leave was approved, FMLA would take longer to approve. Fine. Well, here we are 5 weeks later and have not received a single cent from Unum. Every time we call to find out what's going on we deal with a different CSR who has no clue what is going on, and has us submit the same paperwork over and over. Says they'll be in touch in a day or two but they never do and we have to hound them. Today we were told that they have no record of our maternity leave at all and the FMLA approval was still pending. I am honestly stunned at how inept this company is, and how much they just don't care about the extra stress and emotional and financial duress they put on vulnerable people. We thankfully have been able to get by on savings so far but we are running low , and still don't have any of the money WE ARE DUE AND PAY A PREMIUM FOR EVERY MONTH. Unum is notorious for denying claims for no reason, not paying out policies, and just being awful to work with. How the government allows an organization like this to still exist is beyond me. Any company that contracts for Unum for its employee benefits does not deserve your business or employment. This company getting swallowed up by the earth would be a blessing upon humanity. Any one who works for Unum needs to take a good look at themselves in the mirror and ask if the paycheck is worth being completely devoid of any morals or humanity."
"Employers beware! I'm a General manager for an office for a pretty big company that uses Unum for Life insurance, short term disability, and long term disability. After a year in, they decide to do a company wide audit and half my team lost their benefits! Some for as simple as having a history of panic attacks! They assure our company that they will issue refunds to the company and employees that paid in the previous year. That is yet to be seen. I'll be advocating that the company ditches Unum before open enrollment. If they didn't want to insure our employees, they should have asked those questions at enrollment, but they did not. What a disgusting way to save a dime."
"If I could give this company a zero, I would. The worst experience dealing with an insurance company I ever had . They will do everything in their power to not pay you. If you ever have to use short term disability don't expect to get any money. My husband had cancer surgery and his benefits were scheduled to take effect May 1st. They said that they were only going to pay him for two weeks and they do not pay you for the first week you are out. So that meant he would only receive one weekly payment. Although the FMLA paperwork and the doctors paperwork indicated that he would be off work for 4-6 weeks. They wanted him to get up out of his sick bed and take another form to the doctor to verify that he would be off work for 4-6 weeks even though they had all the required paper work. Rip off and will do everything in their power not to pay you when you need it the most. (Greed!!!)"
