Reviews of UCSF Dental Center
"I chose a student clinic after very good experiences at others. The systems in place at UCSF are NOT patient-friendly, are unprofessional and do nothing to build trust. The appointment line requires you to to leave a message. I finally received a call back today 1/26/24 (6 weeks later) was told it would be at least 4 more weeks (now 10 weeks total) before I would be seen just for an assessment. Never having been UCSF I had questions, and in the weeks that had elapsed, I'd cracked a tooth. Reply was there would be 2 more appointments (equally far apart) before any treatment, each booking out 8+ additional weeks (or 4-5 MONTHS from my initial call to receiving any treatment) to be performed by a student with supervision, and if I needed anything more than a cleaning, in short, it would take 5-10 MONTHS to get my tooth fixed or extracted. There was no concern about pain or infection setting in or how that might effect my health and immunity in times when COVID is still an evolving reality. The major concern was my insurance coverage information. I provided it, but was told it was not correct...even though it had worked just fine elsewhere. After several minutes of repeating the info and trying to assure her (she never identified herself), she continued to argue, escalated in rudeness and volume, and spoke so quickly her dialogue become unintelligible. Realizing reason was not effective and my health and her job performance were of absolutely no consequence to her, I thanked her for her time and ended the call. I worked in health care admin, insurance, and patient services for years in professional, private, and teaching settings. I trained people in customer service. UCSF needs some serious management changes in patient care delivery with a focus on SERVICE along with a healthy dose of professionalism, compassion, and positive attitude. This is also "not my first rodeo" as a patient or being part of a service team in a teaching hospital in rural AND major urban settings. There are so many efficient and professional appointment and service delivery management options that are HIPPA compliant, automated, and involve human contact, and UCSF is right up the road from Silicpn Valley, so improvement IS very possible. After reading the reviews here and finding out how accurate they are over time, there is no way I would trust UCSF Dental School with my health. Dental work is not regulated or transparent in CA, is addressed neglectfully by coverage plans, and there are literally millions of people who's overall health has suffered from untreated or incompetently treated and avoidable dental conditions that should be part of anyone's health care. UCSF is a teaching facility so will not be like a visit to a private dentist, but because it is a teaching environment, there is also better foundation in current treatments and new technologies that can be BETTER than we can find privately, when operating at it's potential. A Medical/Dental School Clinic is also a COMMUNITY service provider in a community that really NEEDS it. UCSF has great potential to do that service well with changes in HOW care is provided and needs to seriously rethink it's service model, the personnel it chooses, and integrate more current professional systems into patient care before I will trust them with my family's health. When I lived in Southern CA I had wonderful experiences at the UCLA Dental School; very professionally run from the first call and consistently realistic, caring and professional assessment, procedures, and follow up which included regular visits and complex surgery. Perhaps one of the best ways UCSF can improve is to study how the others are doing it well. Until then, it's worth the 12 hour round trip drive to return to UCLA."
"Treatment plans are very weird. You get one thing done by a specialist on one floor and then you wait like a month to have your next phase of treatment on the same tooth by your assigned student dentist on another floor. Within the 4-week waiting time between appts, your tooth goes messed up and you literally end up extracting it. The waiting time between appts are too long. Treatment plans should be organized in a timely manner if more than one clinic is involved. Student dentists are awesome, so as the professors, but if you need treatments that require multiple assessments, including general and specialized then I would not recommend this clinic. Cross functional teams don’t seem to communicate each other."
"I was referred to the UCSF dental clinic by my East Bay dentist, and despite the initial challenge of securing an appointment, my experience with Dr. Vincent Li, one of the periodontists on the 3rd floor, was exceptional. Dr. Li was caring, attentive, patient, and kind. He conducted a thorough assessment of all my teeth and even went to the extra mile by consulting with senior members of the clinic to ensure a well-informed and tailored treatment plan for my various dental issues. Notably, his expertise in plaque removal during my appointment, a result of my morning routine with black tea, was outstanding—remarkably pain-free with no gum bleeding in comparison to all my past experiences. My teeth now look brighter, and I can confidently smile again. Grateful for Dr. Li's expertise and the overall positive experience at UCSF dental clinic. Thank you."
"The staff at the reception were extremely impatient and annoyed. They acted as if you were a burden. I brought my mom here, whose face was all swollen and was in pain. We asked very politely about the registration process and basically got shouted at because the staff somehow decided we weren’t worth their time. I’m frankly shocked that this is part of the usually reputable UC system. I suggest that the hospital provides training so the staff treat patients nicely."
"I really like this clinic, I brought my 2 kids, and My friend brought her 3 kids, My uncle brought his 4 kids. We all get the appointment on the same week. They are very efficient, and working very hard to make every piece smoother. And We really appreciated about that."
