Reviews of Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital
"I've had excellent care here for my disability, both inpatient and PHP. The staff care more than most hospitals. Inpatient Adult 4 (lowest acuity) is very nice, and I hope all of the units can receive similar facelifts if they haven't already. PHP has excellent staff and an excellent program. ECT staff are also also wonderful. This hospital saved my life on multiple occasions. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the cafeteria food."
"Posting my own review due to previous reviews that led me to taking my husband there. My husband battles self arm, negative thoughts and possibly has a mood disorder. I’m an undergrad student studying to be a psychologist so between me and his actual therapist we work together to try help him find a solution. It’s been tough so we decided to try Vanderbilt psychiatric hospital for help. We told them coming in that he absolutely cannot take Olanzapine. It causes him to stop breathing in his sleep. He nearly died last year from it. We also told them that under no circumstances was he to be transferred to another facility. Especially a state hospital. He had an awful experience at Western State in Boliver Tn. He was treated terrible & after I made a post on fb I found out that many other people had been abused there as well. He was placed in a room in admissions with the intent to move him to a room upstairs where he would see Drs and get a professional opinion. The first night was awful. He woke up choking. Guess what. They gave him olanzapine EVEN AFTER being told the risk. Nobody was on the same page at all. Nobody knew what was going on. One person told me they were waiting to move him. Another person told me he was going to be taken to a hospital. They told me I had to pay $13k upfront for just the bed. Well we don’t have that. If we did I’d certainly go to a private facility for his help.He sat in there for days. No shower. Couldn’t brush his teeth. He asked for toiletries to clean up and was told “hold on” several times. I ended up having to threaten them with a lawsuit just to get him out. It was a horrible experience! If you love your family member DONT TAKE THEM HERE."
"I'll never understand how anyone could think treating people (who finally surrender and ask for help) like inmates could ever be helpful or beneficial. How does policing personal phone use prove to be helpful or beneficial in reality? There are no tvs in patient rooms and little to nothing to do except sit in your anxiety. My experience with a night nurse was horrid. I have to use a cpap machine when I sleep, so they require someone watch you at night because it's a "hazard." I got up because I felt extremely ill and the nurse watching me says, "do you want to put your cpap away?! That's the whole reason I'm having to sit back here." She also became extremely hateful when I had questions about medicines she was trying to give me. At one point I asked what the medicine does and her response was, "so you don't want it?" And before I could answer she stomped off with it and said, "I'll just tell the doctor you don't want it!" Speaking of medicine, I was offered Pepto for nausea and souped up benadryl for anxiety. It was a joke! I also didn't appreciate my personal health issues being discussed right in front of my room mate and don't know how that isn't a huge hippa violation. The nurses at the nurses station will sit and gossip about one another. I witnessed a ton of unprofessionalism. The experience I had when I first got there VS how I was treated once I got upstairs was night and day. I feel like I was lulled into a false sense of security or "tricked" into agreeing to stay. I 110% do not recommend this place under any circumstances."
"VPH used to be a great place but now it’s a hospital full of the most judgmental physicians and mental health care staff. The physicians, especially Dr. Allahaim and Dr. Satterthwaite are the most uncaring individuals I have met while struggling with depression. They have no compassion for their patients. They refuse to listen and make judgements and decisions before they even meet you. The staff is allowed to put anything in your chart whether it’s true or not and there is no recourse to amend it, only to possibly add a comment if that individual will allow it. If you try to advocate for yourself, you will just be labeled and given worse treatment. The adult 4 unit could be a great place for healing. Most of the nurses are wonderful especially Kim and Rebecca. Hadassah however is argumentative and just as judgmental as the physicians. The BHS’s Michael and Vincent are great and are always helpful. I even spoke with a hospital administrator, John who when I voiced my concerns just gave me a blank stare and asked if I had any other questions. Complete waste of time. Complete waste of a position. I am truly disappointed in VPH. I’m not surprised that they lose so many patients. To be in mental health, you need to actually be caring and compassionate. The residents are learning how to treat mental illness from these physicians and that in my opinion is the saddest part of all."
"I spent a lot of my teenage years here, my first admission being 13 and my last being 16. I would not be here today if it wasn’t for this hospital and the AMAZING staff. In a total I think I was admitted 7 times, and NEVER had a bad experience. The staff in the adolescent unit are the most important and supportive group of people I’ve ever met. The medication management was very beneficial and so was ECT. The head doctors and anesthesiologist were amazing, for ECT and med management. Vanderbilt helped me get to a long term treatment facility and I got the help I needed. I recommend this place to anyone who is struggling, both adult and adolescent. This place is life changing in the best way possible."
