"Mexican food in San Diego. I've only been here once but expect I'll be back if my company continues to send me to an annual meeting down here going forward. While I think Mexican or Tex Mex food and atmosphere is hard to do badly, it's also hard to stand out above a crowd. Barrio Star stood out as above the crowd in my opinion for what I had there, and like I said I'll definitely visit again when in SD. What I had was more American Mexican fare, not the type of plates that would make me think I could be at a joint in some corner of Mazatlan, but it's nice and comfortable to have expectations and then have them met well. I wasn't there late in the evening so don't know if it changes, but it didn't seem like a party hangout. At the dinner hours it was a relaxed place that seemed more like a favored local watering hole. The beer was nice and cold like it should be and there was a nice selection. The mixed drinks were good, neither weak / watered down or heavily poured / extra strong. I enjoyed a great time here with my group of friends in the gorgeous afternoon weather of San Diego. Visit and enjoy a good meal if you're in the area."

"Great food, wonderful atmosphere, excellent service. The tacos barria were incredible! For drinks we had a flight of margaritas including a blackberry jalapeño that was amazing. For non-alcohol I ordered a strawberry lemonade that was made with fresh strawberries and beautifully presented. Barrio Star is my new local favorite!"

"Our server Kris was awesome! Very on top of various bills in a big group. Great options for gluten free and vegetarian, clearly marked, and for both at the same time which is rare. Soy chorizo and potato tacos were very nice. $5 tacos before 5pm was awesome, and the different margaritas were great"

"I was looking for a healthy meal, and both the pepinos and the Mexican salad were filling and delicious. The salad had lots of lime juice in it, and the pepinos were loaded with flavor and quite delicious."

"I was not too impressed with this wanna be fancy but casual restaurant. I found it overpriced, the service could have been better and the food and drinks were average but overpriced. The queso dip comes with 5 chips, it’s ridiculous. Maybe I tried all the wrong things, but my favorite thing was the regular margarita. Good location and good atmosphere, but I will not be going back."
