About the Russian Gulch Bridge
The Russian Gulch Bridge, located on Shoreline Highway in Mendocino, California, is a beautiful historic structure designed by Henry E. Kuphal and built in 1939-1940. Originally named the Frederick W. Panhorst Bridge in 1974, this bridge was dedicated by the governor and lieutenant governor in June 1940. Featured on the cover of California Highways and Public Works magazine in December 1940, this bridge is a significant landmark in the area. Similar to the arch bridge over Jug Handle Creek, the Russian Gulch Bridge replaced older wooden trestle bridges along the coast. Spanning over Jug Handle State Natural Reserve, this bridge is a testament to the engineering and architectural history of California.
Reviews of Russian Gulch Bridge
"Magical place! It never get old. You see something different with every visit. You can walk to the headlands or spend time at the picnic grounds while waiting for the sunset"
"Cool to look at! There is a parking lot right at the bridge so there is no waking needed to get to the viewpoint. There are also bathrooms here. You can walk along the beach under the bridge too."
"Nice architecture of the bridge. Amazing views with the river meeting the ocean. A very small hike from the parking lot gives access to this bridge view. A great place to spend time with friends and family."
"This was unexpectedly one of the highlights of our trip to Fort Bragg/Mendocino. The fee is $8 per car and the pass allows you to get into any other state parks you visit that day. We enjoyed the headland trails, the sink hole and the beach under the bridge. There were many beautiful views and the trails we're leisurely and not strenuous. If you have time, this is an excellent place to hike and see some beautiful coastline."
"Just one other beautiful spot along the Mendocino coast (no sarcasm intended!), incredibly clear water, backdrop of the bridge and small steam coming into the sea. It's in the State Park so a small fee to access."
