"I discovered Makai Sushi based on the positive online reviews, and it lived up to the hype. I opted for the Godzilla Bowl with Fresh Ahi, Salmon, and Blue Crab on a mix of Sushi Rice and Vegetables. The dish delivered a flavorful freshness in every bite, and the portions were satisfying. I had the opportunity to chat with Chef Matthew, the mastermind behind the menu. Chef Matthew had a Sushi/Poke spot in Hawaii (before COVID hit), earning a spot in Yelp’s top 100 for two consecutive years. Clearly, the accolades are well-deserved. Learning about his passion for sushi, his roots, and managing a one-man show to craft these delicious and fresh poke bowls left me seriously impressed. The service was prompt, Chef Matthew was friendly, and the establishment was clean and neat. Although it was my first visit, I am keen on returning to try other items on the menu. Pro tip: While the food is a solid 10/10, dining in is recommended for the complete Makai Sushi experience."

"A tad on the expensive side but you can't knock the quality!! Food was fresh and made to order. Ahi was flavorful and fresh. The salmon was just as good. I would have liked a tad more to eat, I left a little hungry for almost $50 but all in all the food is tasty and fresh. The owner is super nice and his mom was a hoot. I will go back."

"This was such a great spot! We came for lunch while visiting San Diego and it makes me wish there was something similar back home. The Godzilla bowl was very fresh with generous portions. Definitely worth the extra for the blue crab. The roll was on the large side and the wasabi was not stinging like horseradish. The tostada was a favorite. It had a mix of fish and crab and was surprisingly easy to eat without making a mess. The owner was so friendly as well! Makai Sushi reminds me of places I visited in Maui. Overall, the food is superb and you’re certainly getting your money’s worth, if not more."
