"Update: I want to thank the manager of this Gelson's store for reaching out to me by email and I will certainly give the bakery another try. I appreciate the thoughtfulness he showed in responding to me. 6 March 2024 Original: First, let me say that Gelson’s, 1660 San Miguel Drive, Newport Beach is generally a pleasant shopping experience, and without exception, the cashiers at checkout are the best and continue to be. However, I sometimes have less than satisfactory results with the bakery staff and their products. This was probably my worst bakery visit ever at Gelson‘s in Newport Beach. When I ordered a birthday cake for my husband, the woman was very curt and short on the phone. Secondly, when I picked it up, I had to wait and I saw people working, and then I eventually rang the bell, as there were four people behind the counter. 1-2-3-4. Granted one person was getting off work and leaving so that left three but nobody responded to me until I rang the bell. I could literally see them. Finally, and this is the worst part: I have been buying these cream cheese chocolate cakes for years, and this was the worst-tasting one ever. I probably will not buy it again. The cream cheese tasted “off” like it was going bad. I was told that this would be a fresh cake. The cake was OK not super moist but it was the weird frosting flavor that was horrible and added to the less than acceptable Gelson’s experience."

"Every single item is more expensive than in any other supermarket. I dare you to find one. This would be perfectly justifiable if they had stellar service. But in 4 years I have never seen more than 2 registers open. Usually it's 1. So there is ALWAYS a line. This is my first 1-star review in my life. That's how bad it is. Save yourself time and money by going to Pavilions"
