Reviews
"Having heard rave reviews about Wojia Hunan Cuisine, my anticipation was high as we ventured into this Berkeley staple. From the moment we started with their Glutinous Rice Balls, it was clear that Wojia was going to surpass every expectation. The rice balls were a delightful introduction, setting the stage for a culinary journey through Hunan cuisine. The Hot & Sour Soup followed, and it was nothing short of incredible. Its balance of flavors was a masterclass in how traditional elements can be executed to perfection. The soup had just the right kick and sourness, making it unforgettable and a must-try for anyone visiting. Our journey continued with the green beans and walnut shrimp, each dish showcasing the chef’s ability to highlight the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients. The green beans were cooked to perfection, maintaining their vibrant color and crispness, while the walnut shrimp was a heavenly mix of crunchy, sweet, and savory—a dish truly “out of this world.” The complimentary tea provided a soothing counterpoint to the rich flavors of the meal, demonstrating Wojia’s attention to detail and commitment to an authentic dining experience. Service was impressively quick, ensuring our meal progressed smoothly without any unnecessary waits. While the ambiance was just okay, lacking some of the flair one might expect, it did nothing to detract from the stellar quality of the food and the efficiency of the service. Wojia Hunan Cuisine is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Hunan in Berkeley. Each dish we tried was a testament to the skill and passion behind the scenes, making it clear why this spot comes so highly recommended. I look forward to returning and exploring more of their menu, confident that each visit will be as remarkable as the first."
"This Chinese restaurant is okay. We tried the duck and the fish & tofu, and they were tasty but pretty spicy. The next day, both me and my partner had some tummy troubles, probably because the spice level was higher than what we're used to. It didn't hurt, though, so maybe it was just the spiciness. The food is good, and we got seated quickly. The duck wasn't my favorite, but it was okay. Overall, it's a good place to try Chinese food in town, just be careful if you're not a fan of too much spice!"
"We are a group of four, and it's become my go-to place for satisfying my spicy cravings. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Toothpick Lamb, Jelly Noodles, Layered Pig Ear, Beef Combination Frog with Golden Soup, and Mongolian Beef. I must start by raving about the Toothpick Lamb – the flavor is absolutely incredible. The only downside is that the portion size is a bit small, but the taste more than makes up for it. The Pig Ear dish also left a positive impression – it's flavorful and quite tasty. However, for those who can't handle too much spiciness, it's essential to take note of the menu's indicated spice levels. My tolerance is relatively high, but some of my family members found themselves sweating while eating, so proceed with caution if you're spice-sensitive. On the other hand, the Mongolian Beef was a real highlight. It was delicious, and I have no complaints about it whatsoever. Unfortunately, the Beef Combination Frog with Golden Soup left something to be desired. The portion of the frog was disappointingly small, and the way it was cut was a bit odd. I ended up mostly eating the joints and bones, which was less than satisfying."
"A little overpriced but very delicious food! We tried chive & tofu stir fry, sesame balls (their most famous dish), toothpick lamb stir fry, and lotus root with pork. Only complaint I have about the food is that lotus root with pork literally had two tiny pieces of pork. I'm talking like fingernail tiny lol we were very confused and thought maybe they forgot to put in the meat but the server said that's how it's supposed to be. Everything was very delicious though, and we are definitely planning to go back. Just not gonna order the lotus root dish The sesame balls were so interesting too. We ordered it because it seemed super famous and popular. Honestly, it was kinda weird at first because it's savory and slightly spicy at first but inside is sweet and chewy so it wasn't fully a savory dish nor a dessert dish. But it grew on us as we kept eating it. Definitely give it a try!! I liked that the interior was clean and new. I'm hoping more restaurants like this opens near us!"
"I've been coming here for the last year or two since moving to the area. It's a great spot with authentic northern Chinese flavors. Food is a bit spicier than bay area ppl might be used to but very tasty. Recommended dishes: fried diced chicken "la zi ji", noodle dishes, veggie combo with celery and lily, bead curd pork, string beans, intestine, and duck, fried rice with spare ribs, toothpick beef, Dan Dan noodles, lemonade"
