"Today the new Westlake course was opened. After a long-awaited $15M - $20M+ remodel, the new course did not disappoint. I will expand on a few of these points below, but in summary.... i.) The green complexes are far superior (larger, better situated, more appropriate undulation and slope) than the OG Lost Creek course, ii.) The main asset of the course, Barton Creek and Short Spring Branch Creek has been "released". The visibility and views of the creek and WATER are no longer hidden by overgrown groves of volunteer trees, but rather golfers can easily experience the beauty of the running water and flowing creeks on so much more of the course, (I hear the freeze caused more than $500K in unanticipated landscaping and tree clearing, but it was evident the team cleared a ton of trees, especially near the creeks), iii.) Many of the illogical and frustrating aspects of the original course have been removed and/or improved (the large unnecessary mounds around many of the greens have been removed, and the small if non- existent fringe has been added or expanded on all greens, and the weirdly situated tee boxes that over penalized a fade or draw have been neutralized). To add to these summary points, to those more interested, I'd like to comment more on the greens. Because of the mass size of the greens, there will be many more options for pin placements. I expect the course to play with greater degrees of variety than before the remodel. As an example, the green on #4, the elevated Par 3, has three distinct unique parts of the green which will all play very differently. It is HUGE and will provide for some very long and interesting putts. The green on 14, the Par 4, has been elongated and has tremendous undulation. The green is very difficult now, but fair too. It is much longer and because of the new challenge, I think 14 is the most improved hole on back 9. In addition to the new, more complex, yet appropriate greens, the Tee boxes are worth a few comments. If you played the OG Lost Creek and are familiar with it, you'll remember how punitive holes like #13 (dogleg right) and #17 (straight hole that runs beside the creeks towards entrance) had Tee boxes that really penalized a draw. Well that is now no longer. The tee box on #13 has been moved back, and lengthened, and the tee box on #17 has been moved to the left and takes the trees immediately to the right out of play. For the average (bogey) golfer like me, it makes the holes more appropriate and much more fun. As promoted, most tee boxes have been enlarged or lengthened, and improved. In addition to improved greens, releasing of views of water and the creek, and better Tee Boxes; the cart path has been redirected in many places to the betterment of the course and the players experience. After #10, you can swing around the championship tees and catch a great elevated hill country view, and at #7 the cart path now comes left of the Tee boxes, showing you much more of the cleared creek. The highlight for many will be the waterfall finishing #18 (par 3) which is pretty spectacular. The ladies tee box is located next to recently redone stone wall which now blocks the pump station, which is nice. And the green has been widened by a scope of 5x. Every golfer who has played Lost Creek for years, will notice subtle differences on the New Westlake Country Club course. These are just a few, as there are a hundred more intentional changes. I won't even go into the improved grass and quality of greens which will allow pressure and faster and more challenging putts. I personally want to thank Lanny Watkins, the golf GC that shaped and rebuilt the greens, Andrew Madsen (Head Pro), Regan Olson (Super), and Chip Gist (GM), for the huge amount of work it took to pull off this remodel. Your work will pay dividends for decades. Many thanks to Invited Clubs management team for having the vision and for allowing us to experience this truly once in a lifetime transformation."
