Reviews of OPTIONS Transitions to Independence
"I only miss 6 staff members who worked with me at OPTIONS from 2019 to 2022. The ones who were bullies are mentioned below: 1. College Liaison: she kept getting angry over every mistake I made. In June 2020, she made me study overtime. I logged onto college support at 6:30 pm India time that day and finished my assignments for the day. I had planned to do the remaining assignments over the course of the week, but the staff made me do all of them that day itself, which I finished at 10:30 pm. I had not even eaten dinner. In April 2021, when I was at the spring family weekend at Brehm, the staff told a faculty member that I was failing my classes. In January 2022, she even assumed that I bunked class even though I was still in India and SIU classes had not begun yet. When she told me “I could have killed you” in February 2022, that was the final nail in the coffin. As per what I am being told, she even told other students similar statements, like when she told my friend’s friend that “if I was your parent, I would have killed you.” Oh, and on top of that, she butted into students’ matters outside of college. 2. Director: a friend of mine once knocked on a standard student’s window at building X in front of me. Though I tried to stop my friend, the director sent an email to my mom telling her what he heard and threatening to call the police if this happened again. The unfortunate part is that he is not willing to believe my friend who is still at OPTIONS that I did not knock on the student’s window. On top of that, he supports the college liaison over her “I could have killed you” statement. 3. Former life skills coach: he lied to a fellow peer of mine that I was holding a grudge against the latter because of a common girl he and I dated. 4. Former Vocational counsellor: she refused to work with me, lying that I was not authorised to do any kind of employment in the United States, even on-campus employment which I was allowed to do. She also said that I “need to concentrate on studies.” However, I had a lot of free gaps in my time so I could have easily fit in time for an on-campus job at SIU. But she continued to stand her ground and lie that it was not allowed. It was only after my mom intervened that she finally agreed to work with me. But by then, it was too late. It was April, the academic year was almost over, and I was leaving OPTIONS. The unfortunate part is that everyone agreed with the aforementioned staff member. 5. Former Independent living coach: he was toxically strict, not letting me wear sweatpants even though it was not against the OPTIONS or JALC dress code. He even punished me over a harmless prank I did with a friend. While I have accepted that whatever happened with me at Brehm Preparatory School from August 2017 to May 2019 was for the best, these 5 OPTIONS staff members have traumatised me so much that I can’t stop ranting to myself about them even today. To the director, you need to have a serious talk with your staff about how to treat students. If the staff deserve respect, then the students too deserve courtesy."
"Options is an amazing program that truly embodies the best of transition support to independence. Our son attended two years of the Options program. He grew tremendously in his ability to take care of himself in all aspects- living and cooking, navigating peer relationships, attending college classes, and doing internships that were meaningful to his career goals with the SIU football team, and at a local gym. None of this would have been possible without the multidisciplinary support he received from the dedicated Options staff- nursing, psychological services, academic support, speech and language support, and life skills support in his apartment. We honestly can not say enough positive things about this program and the wonderful staff. Our son grew in ways we never thought possible. He is now home and attending community college, and has developed the confidence to move forward thanks to his time at Options."
"There is this one staff member that is an absolute hypocrite. That staff member (not saying any names) tells student not to gossip about other while that in particular staff member does exactly that. The main reason this bothers me so much that this staff member's gossip could potentially hurt my reputation among my friends. I don't think that could happen but it could. To make matter worse, since I no longer am a student at OPTIONS, I cannot defend myself from this ridiculous unprofessional gossip by this staff member. So for all I know this staff member could be talking about me behind my back and damaging my reputation and I will never ever now or be able to stand up for myself. This staff member has only recently been doing this. They used to be one of my my favorite staff members. Seriously, this staff member deserves to be fired for this unprofessional and absolutely ludicrous gossip. It's because of this staff member and this staff member alone why I giving a 1 star review. I like all the other staff but this one in particular staff member just ruined it for all of them. I would've given 5 star if it weren't for that staff member."
"AWFUL! We traveled hundreds of miles to visit this program and we're surprised at the lack of oversight of the students in their daily class activities, in their work, and in their group homes. This is not a safe place to leave your child, especially your daughters. The director, Char Reed, communicated well with us before we left our home to visit this place, but once we were there her communication with us and her treatment of our daughter was just disappointing. She didn't even pretend to have a conversation with our daughter. Reed simply ignored her and spoke to us (clearly, she was interested only in money.) The apartments used as group homes were in an unsafe neighborhood. The main school was housed in a rundown old building that looked like it had been a dental office at one time. Such a waste of time for our family in visiting this place. Your child deserves better than this. Avoid avoid avoid."
"As summer school begins for Amanda Cohen, Lori Friedlander Cohen and I were reflecting on the past four years at OPTIONS. We have watched our daughter grow into an independent woman which has been supported greatly under the wonderful leadership of Char Reed, her incredible staff and the curriculum at OPTIONS. The faculty, staff and administrators are passionate about their calling and our child has reaped those rewards. She has been challenged and supported by each of her amazing teachers. Our daughter has grown so much academically and socially. She has cultivated strong relationships both at OPTIONS and her work. Her friends include students from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The teachers are caring and committed to her success. The mix of the student body has prepared her to be more knowledgeable about the world. Thanks to OPTIONS, she has been given the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed in an amazing nurturing environment. The extracurricular activities have benefited her so much as well. The formative experience in this wonderful school is unique in the country and is an exceptional value. I honestly don’t know if you can find a place where the teachers and staff love their students more than they do at OPTIONS. Today we can truly say our daughter is fully ready to live and work on her own."
