"I have done my own taxes for the past 25-30 years. I started out just using the various governmental forms, but then decided I would use a couple of tax preparation software companies, as I liked the idea of the software asking me questions and allowing me to provide my own informational responses. But I found those two software vehicles became what I call 'too cleaver". I say that because they seemed to take my information and prepare it in such a way that it no longer seemed to be 'my tax return.' The biggest disappointment came this year when I completed my federal return and tried to start on one of two state returns, and the software basically locked up and would not allow me to enter information. Since I normally file late in the season, I became frustrated and decided I would choose a tax preparation service to get it taken care of for me. I have been working a lot of hours and just did not have the time put up with these delays. I choose Jackson Hewitt after doing an on line search. I turned out to be more expensive than I imagined, but it was offset by these points.....1. My preparer came up with a refund more than four times greater than the preparation fee...and 2...the entire process for federal and two states was completed in one hour. The location was only ten minutes from my home, the preparer said she had been doing returns for over 15 year, she stayed on task, she was cordial and I had a feeling of confidence in her ability. The only downside was that the rented office space seemed a bit shabby, and the desk she had to work on looked like something that had been thrown out along the highway. If my returns go through without any problems this year, I will be happy to use Jackson Hewitt again next year. I did forget to ask about their policy in case of a dispute with the federal or state returns, but I am hopeful they will provide support should such a scenario come to pass."
