Reviews of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School
"We love ILS-Batavia! We moved to the area last year and I was worried about switching my daughter to a new school. The staff at Immanuel has been fantastic in welcoming us and accommodating the needs of our family. The principle and teachers are wonderful. My daughter has some special needs and they have been so accommodating and involved to work with us. We also just recently had my son join the preschool program and he loves it. So happy to have found a school that both my kids love."
"Disclaimer: The information that I have presented might not be accurate to this year because I graduated in 2021 and I know a lot of things have changed since then, but I'm giving you the information that I recall. If you are an immanuel staff or teacher, use the advice and opinions I give to make you better. I do have some brutally honest things that did happen my 7th and 8th grade year, but let me say the positives first. (If you want to hear just the brutally honest parts, scroll to the last paragraph). Immanuel Batavia is such a heart warming place for both preschool and elementary school. I went there for a few years in elementary school and loved it! Mrs. Wert and Mrs. Suydam taught me so well and I'll never forget them. They introduced the Word of God at a very young age, but it helped everyone understand who we are as we grew. They had many sports and the coaches were amazing. Mr. Wert, Mr. Hager, (cross country) Mr Morales, Mr McLane (volleyball), Mr. Mudd (basketball), Mrs Suydam (cheer), and Track and Field (same coaches as cross country), they were all so welcoming and so kind. They helped me all grow as an athlete and I'm so glad for each and every one of them. Another thing to note was Mrs. Bogda. She was the orchestra teacher until she retired in 2019. I'll never forget her welcoming smile and her passion to teach me and others. I mentioned Mr McLane from sports, but he also stopped coaching in 2019, but he still helps support the school. He has put on amazing productions and I was so happy to participate in the musicals. The entire school is involved and it's a big part of the school. I left Immanuel in 6th grade to branch out of places because Immanuel is a very small school, 10-20 students in each class from what I could remember. For my class specifically, from what I can remember, there were 12 students in 7th grade and 18 students in 8th grade. I came back in 7th grade the year 2019-2020 and absolutely loved it from what I could recall. All the teachers were so happy to have me back because I made a good impression on them. The only true down side in the middle school wing is how many teachers teach each subject. I've heard things have changed in recent years, but when I was there, each teacher was teaching at least 3 subjects for all 3 grades. It was honestly crazy how much work they had! In 7th grade, there were 4 teachers. Mrs. McFarland taught Course 2 (7th grade math), Algebra 1, Literature, and Gym. Mrs. Randall taught Course 1 + 3 (5th/6th and 8th) and English. Mr. Moser (doesn't teach at Immanuel anymore) taught Spanish, History and Gym. Mrs Bierlein taught Science, Religion, and Art. I find it strange that a teacher teaches both science and religion because they're ideas conflict one another, but that's besides the point. My 7th grade year was cut short due to covid, so I don't really remember much, but overall the year was great, but I wish I had more time to enjoy it. Here comes the brutally honest stuff a.k.a. my 8th grade year. Covid was still a really big thing, so we had to limit distance, wear our masks, and stay in one classroom. It was annoying, but they were following instructions from a higher up. One thing that became quite annoying that year was the chromebook shortage. They just got rid of the computer lab to have chromebooks, but they all stopped working throughout the year. One of the main reasons they quit working is because they wiped them down every time the class was over. The liquid/chemicals seeped down to the cracks of the keys making the keyboards not work. Not to mention students pulled out keys on the computer making it hard to use. Never fear! They had a solution. The chromebooks was had were touch screen. Problem solved right? wrong! Some students weren't very careful or just didn't care, so they dropped the chromebooks. By the end of the year, there were only 7 maybe 10 barely functioning and the rest were just complete garbage. The absolute worst part of it all was the fact that we couldn't bring our own chromebooks to school. It could've solved many problems!"
"I have been a member of Immanuel for the majority of my life. Before becoming a member, my family was scoping the church out to see if it was a good fit. While waiting for the service to start on the first visit, an individual turned around in his pew, introduced himself, and welcomed us to the church. This kind gesture is a prime example of what Immanuel is. Since that day, I have gotten involved with the youth group, Sunday school, bible studies, and mission trips. These experiences have created friendships that are valuable both professionally and spiritually. Although I am moving out of the state soon, I will always remember the impact of the conversations I have had with Pastor Chris, Pastor Kennaugh, and Youth Director Matt Cassidy. I am proud to say I am a member of Immanuel."
"The church "up on the hill" has tremendous hope and faith to offer inside. Welcoming all who come in. Plus spreading joy and comfort to the community with outreach, and they have a fantastic school with dedicated teachers and staff that supercharge young minds to get started on a path to their own greatness. Come in and check it all out!"
"Immanuel Lutheran School is a fantastic school. My children have loved all their teachers and look forward to going to school everyday. The loving atmosphere is just wonderful. Both my wife and I attended parochial schools and feel very blessed that we found not only this school but the great church community there. Anyone interested in a Christ based school for their children from pre school through 8th grade should check out ILS."
