Madonna of the Trail Monument
About the Business
The Madonna of the Trail Monument in Vandalia, Illinois is a historic tourist attraction that pays tribute to the Pioneer Mothers of the covered wagon days. Established in 1928, this monument features a 10-foot tall statue of a pioneer woman holding her baby, with her young son by her side. The monument is made of algonite stone, giving it a warm pink color, and sits on a 6-foot high base that includes inscriptions of historic and local data. Originally located at the south entrance of the former Old State Capitol, the monument was moved to its current location in 1939 for aesthetic reasons. Visitors can explore the monument and learn about its significance through a virtual tour available on the MapNTour app. This iconic monument is a reminder of the strength, beauty, and resilience of the pioneer women who helped shape the history of the United States.

"I am trying to visit them all. I got to this one after dark. The lighting could be improved, but still worth the stop. Unlike Madonnas of the Trail there are other things to see in this area. It is worth the stop."
"Beautiful and historic. Worth a stop. Amble parking by the old state capitol a nice place for a short break."
"There are 12 of these statues spread across the country. Very interesting history about their origin."
"Madonna of the Trail statue stands southwest corner of the Vandalia Old State Capitol property. The corner of the intersection of 4th St. & Gallatin St. It's a beautiful statue and the Old State Capitol is well worth your time to see historical chambers and furniture of the mid to late 1800s. Plenty of parking and easy access with restaurants within walking distance."
"Impressive statue. As Sara said, 1 of 12 on this old route. Very cool that they honor the women who traveled through here on their way west. Must have been incredibly hard to make that journey back then, especially if you had to take care of kids too. I am grateful that they did, and made our country great."
