"Well maintained trails, easy to follow and clearly marked. Bathrooms were clean and in order. Nicely maintained shelter house perfect for events. Lots to do and family fun friendly! This is has historical sites. There's an reenactment here once a year. Cannon on display. Old time houses. Old mill. Plenty of history markers!"
"It is a beautiful site for walking and hiking. The buildings are great for pictures, and you can tour the grounds independently or stop by the grounds office for a guided tour."
"My husband and I had a wonderful weekend. We were the only campers. We loved that but I hope more people consider camping there to keep the necessary funds coming in. Even though the campground has pit toilets they are very clean. You can also drive a short distance to the shelter house for flush toilets and even a shower. My one and only wish would be a back door entrance to the shelter house so you don't interrupt someone already using the shelter house."
"We have gone here several times (from 2 hours away) to go camping. This trip was a full week long. If you go when the Des Moines river is low,you can walk across to Iowa. We took kayaks and drove people to Farmington Iowa, they had a great hour and a half float back to Battle of Athens. Since we went during the week we were the only ones there. We had a great time and the ranges are very nice."
"Neat and tidy way to explore not only a piece of local history but national history as well. Roadside bathroom was not disgusting, shelter, shower house, campground, and playground were closed still but there is still so much to see and enjoy. Completely recommend, and will be suggesting my kids' classes go for field trips."
