Reviews of Reproductive Psychiatry and Counseling
"Dr. Nichelle Haynes has been my collaborative problem-solver, and a complete breath of fresh air. She has never made me feel like I wasn’t involved in my care and gives me complete autonomy to make the best decisions for my family. Things would look very differently for me if it wasn’t for her care. So grateful for a phenomenal physician on my side. If for some reason you don’t feel like you’re “clicking” with your provider, it’s ok to try someone else."
"My wife has suffered severely from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) with our second child's pregnancy. She was hoping to establish care with this clinic and to her surprise, was offered a next day consultation that another patient had cancelled. She accepted the appointment but woke up the next morning immobilized by HG and cold/flu like symptoms. When she called in to cancel the appointment, she was told that she would be charge nearly $500 since they require a 24 hour notice before cancellations. The problem I have with your actions: 1) You did not mention the cancellation policy when you offered the appointment, which was already within the 24 hour time period and so a cancellation without charge would not have been possible. Notifying the patient of your cancellation policy should be standard policy when offering appointments, especially in cases where the time frame does not allow compliance with the 24 hour cancellation policy. 2) The service you are providing is care for pregnant women who are suffering. When given the opportunity to make this situation right you instead force my wife to escalate the conversation until she finally reaches the CEO who talks about "fairness". There is no fairness in your decision, only a lack of communication and and unwillingness to treat scheduling complications on a case by case basis. We need this money, especially now that we are 2 months away from having our second child. But please, talk to us about fairness some more."
"RPC is a great resource for our community. The psychiatrists there have additional training and knowledge regarding mental health issues surrounding pregnancy and the post-partum period. As a fellow psychiatrist in town, I appreciate the information that Dr. Lasseter provides for free on her social media accounts such as a review of just about every psychiatric medication and the most current safety data with regard to pregnancy and nursing. I have even referred several of my own patients there for prenatal care. "
"Reproductive Psychiatry of Austin and Dr. Scott were immeasurably important to me post-partum. I felt completely lost and alone and Dr. Scott was the first person that really saw me and my situation and offered real help and just so much kindness and empathy. She talked me through what drug options I had while breastfeeding and explained that other things I had heard were just plain wrong. I cannot recommend them enough. Truly just a beacon of light during a time that can be quite dark for some women. Look not further. You don’t have to do this alone!"
"When I started working with Dr. Haynes, I’d hardly slept since my daughter was born. For years, I had been muscling through symptoms that I attributed to environmental factors: mostly a colicky baby who didn’t sleep through the night (or stay in bed) until she was six years old. But at around six, my daughter's bedtimes got significantly easier, she slept through the night, and my sleep problems persisted, even worsened. I figured I was doing something wrong.I just wasn't trying hard enough. I didn’t eat well enough or exercise enough. I didn’t get enough vitamin D. My sleep hygiene wasn’t good enough. I visited naturopaths, massage therapists, Rolfers, acupuncturists, countless healers of all stripes. I practiced every kind of yoga I could think of. I eliminated inflammatory foods. I tried (and failed) to adhere to a rigorous regimen of supplements. I replaced the fluorescent bulbs in the house with incandescent light. My husband slept on the couch. Until one day, my husband took both of my hands in his and said, “Honey, maybe this isn’t a sleep issue. Maybe you are depressed.” He said he needed help, that he couldn’t go on living the way we were living. I don’t know if I ever would have booked an appointment for myself. I was too convinced it was my fault. But when my husband asked for help, something inside me shifted, and I knew he was right, so I went. It’s hard to quantify the impact Dr. Haynes has had on my quality of life. It turns out I had spent most of my life muscling through a serious mood disorder. I needed help. It wasn’t my fault. This fact alone freed me from a lifetime of crippling self-blame that had sabotaged almost everything I undertook, especially partnership and motherhood. I’m crying as I type this because it really was like setting down a boulder I’d been carrying since young adulthood. The thing I appreciated most about my first interaction with Dr. Haynes is that she listened. She listened to me and she believed me. She let me tell my whole story. And not only did she take a very detailed history, she was present for me emotionally. In my experience, this is very rare in psychiatry. And as my particular journey has involved medication, it has been extremely meaningful that Dr. Haynes has continued to listen to and believe me. Medication is its own animal, in my experience, and in working to find the right fit, she values my input and my agency, so I feel like a co-creator of my care. Not only has this led me to a medication regimen that has, so far, given me the sleep and stability I’ve been missing for so long, it has allowed me to hold steady when going through the sometimes arduous process of trying different cocktails, being thoughtful instead of reactive when it comes to side effects, titration, and the like. While I honestly feel that medication has allowed me to reclaim my life, I have never wanted meds to be the end all/be all of my treatment—I wanted to approach them as one aspect of a whole spectrum of self-care. I appreciate that Dr. Haynes is aligned with this perspective, supporting my continued participation in both individual and couple’s therapy and encouraging a realistic lifestyle that centers moderation when it comes to overall health. This has been crucial for me, as in the past I’ve tended toward periods of “extreme self-care” that have, as I now understand it, both contributed to my mood swings and undermined my progress. I am essentially telling you all of this so it doesn’t sound hyperbolic when I say that Dr. Haynes has saved my life. I continue to be so grateful for her personal, exceptional care and her and her thoughtful approach to psychiatry."
