"My daughter was in a charter school program for competitive gymnasts that was dissolving & we tried other gym programs including this one. The schedule is VERY intense for young girls: 24 hrs a week even for elementary! The most winning gym in Austin (it's not this one, do your research) has girls working out 15 hrs a week (18 for level 10+), resulting in much happier & well-rounded athletes who don't burn out and get to be kids - many of them have even become successful collegiate gymnasts, not something Moxie can claim. The new head coach and other parents do not like or respect the owners. We were warned about the owners even at our trial! That was mild in comparison to how they trash talk other gyms, families, and even young athletes, which is bold considering nearly all of the higher scoring athletes on this team came from other gyms, and few are able to maintain scores as high as they did previously. My daughter is a well-adjusted, straight A+ student who has never been in any real trouble and has always excelled in gym, but nearly every day we were made to stay late to discuss all of "her issues" and things that were wrong with her. We were so confused! As time went on, the coach suggested to her that it was time to quit, then speaking with us that she needed to quit -- all in a few short months after YEARS of passion & success in the sport. She did not want to quit the sport, just this "coach". After being blamed by the coach for drama outside the gym that she literally had nothing to do with, she was punished at the gym resulting in a full-blown anxiety attack. We sought out help from 2 people. The first, a therapist. The coach was furious and only wanted us to see his approved therapist in San Antonio, and it’s now clear why based on what came up. As a result, we now have a timeline prepared. Fortunately, we also have a former gymnast in the family who, as a former collegiate athlete and olympian still highly involved in his alma mater, was able to put things in perspective for both our gymnast and us. He suspects that this coach, as a failed former gymnast with a daughter who left the sport early, is desperate to still make a name for himself in the sport and sees the strong girls he’s gotten from other programs as his chance — unfortunately a type he’s seen before. Our daughter, and others, were pushed to rush through levels as quickly as possible, but often it’s not what they really want or need. It’s bragging rights for the coach at the detriment to the kids. This was the case for our daughter, who was told by the Moxie coach that she couldn’t achieve her goals without skipping more levels while receiving conflicting advice from our cousin who is actually involved in D1 collegiate gymnastics. Our daughter asked to return to the regular program at her previous gym “because it was actually fun there” and while she’s had a lot of work to do to catch back up from the time she lost at Moxie, she’s happy, healthy, and loving gym (and life) again. Instead of belittling her for struggling and comparing her to teammates who aren’t, coaches are helping her to understand how to adapt skills as she grows. After a few months, she has all of her skills back that she lost at Moxie despite a minor injury. Most of the awful things we heard about the competing gym in Lakeway either come from the Moxie coach who has never worked there and only knows the owners from meets (and he trash-talks his own gym’s owners) and a family who is not welcome at the Lakeway gym after leaving on bad terms. This team has earned its poor reputation and the best part of our experience at this gym was leaving it to rejoin the real world and realizing that our daughter’s “problems” were just projected on her. We have our happy, competitive girl back! It’s really too bad. While we knew this program was still in development, we were really hopeful. I can’t speak to the afterschool programs and know many families enjoy them."
"I cannot recommend this gymnastics studio enough! My 8-year-old daughter has been attending classes here for the past year, and the progress she has made is truly astounding. The instructors are not only highly skilled but also incredibly patient and encouraging. They have created a warm and welcoming environment that has instilled a sense of confidence and determination in my daughter. The facility itself is well-maintained, with top-notch equipment that ensures the safety and comfort of the young gymnasts. I love that the class sizes are usually no more than 8-10 girls. This allows the coaches to take the time to understand each child's strengths and areas for improvement, tailoring their instruction to suit individual needs. The emphasis on proper technique and form is something that I greatly appreciate, as it ensures that the kids are learning the right skills from the very beginning. Additionally, the class schedules are flexible and accommodating, making it convenient for busy working parents. Moxie regularly organizes fun events allowing the kids to demonstrate their progress and build a sense of camaraderie among their team. If you're looking for a place where your child can develop both physically and mentally in a supportive and nurturing environment, this gymnastics studio is the perfect choice. Kudos to the entire team for their exceptional work! I would give it five stars if they had consistently working wifi (mom who works) and if the coaches gave some of feedback/summary of their skillset to the parents in email or on the portal. This would be helpful for us to know what to work on at home."
"The teenage instructors encourage a culture of bullying and untrust. I was appalled at the things I heard the instructions say to the students and removed my child from the gym immediately."
"Coach Carlos is the best and should be considered for the highest level of competition. Moxie is great and should host more competitions!"
"We went for a competition. The space was bigger compared to other spaces. The staff and gym students were very respectful and did a great job keeping the space clean the entire time we were there. The only complaint is that our daughter was competing in her first gymnastics competition. My husband didn't ask and the person at the register didn't volunteer the information that my daughter was free. So we ended up paying for her. When we went to our second competition, we noticed that the guy at the register made a point to share that information with parents before they could ask. My husband said he felt the Moxie staff took advantage of parents that weren't aware of this."
