"I had a rash develop 07/21/23 that quickly took over 40% of my body. I spent 4 days in the ER at University Hospital getting tested for every imaginable disease to no avail. Sweets Syndrome was the pathology result, but did not fit perfectly. It was reviewed by outside experts including Harvard who could not determine exactly what was happening. The rash persists as of 10/13/2023 and multiple dermatologists including the head of dermatology at Mays Cancer Center (a colleague of Dr. Karnad’s) made an urgent referral to Dr. Karnad’s office as I had an anemic condition that could not be explained. Sweets Syndrome (which has not been fully verified) is not a disease, but a reactive rash condition that is indicative of some other potential disease process including leukemia, non-hodgkins lymphoma, mutiple myeloma, and bone cancer. Over the last 70 days, I have been in and out of the ER being tested for literally hundreds of other diseases. I have eliminated infectious diseases, viral, bacterial, fungal, 150 immuno-suppressive disorders, had a fibroid liver scan, upper and lower GI endoscopy, pill cam review of my entire bowel, x-rays, CT scans with contrast of my abdomen to include bladder, kidneys and the rest of my lower abdomen, endocrine studies of my pancreas, pituitary and endocrine system, urology exams, and four biopsies and pathology studies including Harvard and USC med schools. The only thing not reviewed is the fact that I have consistently presented iron anemia since the onset of this persistent rash which could indicate a dread blood disorder until proven otherwise. I have Type II Diabetes and a thyroid disorder called Hashimoto’s syndrome so have a long history of blood work with no incidence of anemia or low Hemaglobin. Both Dr. Karnad’s immediate Dermatology colleague at Mays Cancer Center requested an urgent Hematology consult as well as my private Dermatologist who is both a teaching PhD in Dermatology and a Practioner at the Texas Institute of Dermatology both deemed an urgent need for a Hematology consult. Despite this advice as well as my direct pleas to the New Patient coordinators and direct messages to Dr.Karnad through the MyChart app in the UT Medicine portal, I have never been contacted or responded to for treatment or even a comforting word to give me any relief for my growing anxiety. I simply cannot believe that this is acceptable patient care and borders on neglect. I have since given up on being seen by Dr. Karnad and am being seen by a more caring Hematologist next week and it only took one week to secure an initial consult. I would like to assume that Dr. Karnad has a busy practice treating critically ill patients, but waiting 70 days with no response or any communication seems pretty extreme given the circumstances. I will be logging formal complaints with the Mays Cancer Center and University Hospital administration in hopes of getting some response to my situation in hopes that others do not experience the stress and anxiety I have experienced with Dr. Karnad’s practice as he has apparently forgotten the first part of the Hippocratic oath to “First Do No Harm”. I understand from research that this oath is no longer universally used which is a real shame. Other med schools use a different oath tailored to benefit the physician or none at all which I can only assume has been adopted by Dr. Karnad. Deeply disappointed and still living in fear."
"Dr. Karnad is the best doctor! He is kind, thorough, and is an expert in his practice. He went above and beyond for me when I experienced hematological complications during my pregnancy. He is never in a rush and truly listens to your concerns. It is very clear he cares a lot about his patients! Very thankful for his care."
