Reviews of Anna R Brandon, PhD, ABPP
"I saw Dr. Brandon only once for her (overpriced) intake session. At that time, I was a couple months post-partum after a severely traumatic birth experience. Though it’s been some time since I saw Dr. Brandon, and I’m now doing much better, I feel compelled to write this review because I don’t want anyone else to have the same experience I had. I wish I had some warning. I never would have gone. Dr. Brandon was so callus in her interaction with me that it took me months to muster the courage to go talk to someone else. I found her online. She advertises herself as a specialist in women’s issues. Her rates were far above anyone else that I was considering and I erroneously believed that she charges more because she is better. She is not. When I arrived, she sat in front of me and went on in her sing-song voice about how she has a PhD and how she feels that gives her a “different perspective” than the masters level therapists. It’s different alright. She then asked me to tell her why I was there. As I tried, she continually, and very abruptly, cut me off mid-sentence to fire cutting questions at me. What I had to say was clearly not important. I was trying to speak about life-shattering events in my life and she was cutting me off. One particular response, I still remember. I was trying to tell her that I was having flashbacks. I’ll spare you the details, but these events that were causing the flashbacks were soul-shattering. My heart was pounding out of my chest. All the muscles in my body tensed up, my stomach dropped and my throat tightened. I pushed through all of that to get out the words. The only response a therapist (or heck, just a fellow human being) should have in this scenario is compassion and empathy. I got zero compassion and zero empathy. Dr. Brandon’s response? Her face lit up with an excited, interested smile and she said, “You see what humans are like? It’s so interesting!” At that moment, it was completely clear that her aim in this interaction was not actually to help me heal. I was paying her quite a lot of money for the “privilege” of being an interesting specimen to her…interesting because I had experienced such extreme trauma. To end the visit, she told me that her business is a “time business” and she needs to be paid for her time. I paid her and left realizing that she had gained many things from the interaction. She took my money; she felt empowered in a position of authority over someone who was in a completely vulnerable state; she also had her intellectual curiosity piqued by the coping reaction of a severely traumatized person. I, on the other hand, did not receive any benefit from the interaction. I was actually traumatized by the visit and to add insult to injury, I had to pay for it. Needless to say, I did not go back. She did call to find out why I was not going back. I left her a message letting her know, to which she responded by sending a text saying, “I wish I had been more thoughtful!” Yeah, well, I really wish you were a lot more than just more thoughtful."
