"My daughter is 6 yr old and when I called Renee explained she is really young but she is really interested to learn piano. Renee said she teaches kids around her age. We did our first lesson with her, it was good lesson. my daughter was excited to learn and practiced everyday after school for 15-20 mins. However, 2nd class was horrible. My daughter was in tears when we were driving back and she said the instructor made her feel sad, and she was trying her best but she felt couldn’t do anything right. My daughter even said few times during class she was getting really nervous, but she was respectful and listened well. The instructor lectured her like she was an older kid with years of experience , “I have rules here!” “I told you don’t look at the keyboards, it doesn’t tell you anything!” “Did I say “go?” You are playing before I say go.” “You missed a beat again!” During this class she learned whole note for the first time, so 4 beats. It was a new concept or she was nervous and she counted too fast, and the instructor showed little patience for her. This was her 2nd piano lesson and she is 6 year old. If my daughter was an older student and had been playing piano for some time. I understand it should be more strict and higher standards. I grew up playing piano myself too, you have to stay discipline to be good at it and lots of practice. But the instructor showed little patience for her and talking down to her. The instructor actually didn’t say anything encouraging. My daughter enrolled gymnastics and dance since she was 4, she listens instructions well and hasn’t complained about her school teachers or coaches till recently. And today she said she doesn’t feel comfortable to go back and she feels sad and asked if I could teach her instead (because she still loves piano and practices everyday). We just made a decision to look for a new school yesterday, because I don’t want my daughter to associate piano lessons with sadness and stress, continuing her lesson with Renee would only make her piano journey challenging. I hope this will help some parents, I wish I reached out to more schools before enrolling her. After calling few other school in Pflugerville yesterday , I just learned, most of music schools recommends/offers trail lessons and you don’t have to pay full month tuition upfront. This gives you a chance to see, how instructor and student interact with each other. We decided to have a trail class with an instructor only focuses on teaching younger kids. The school owner said the instructor makes it fun for the younger students but still learn the fundamentals."
