Amboy Marsh Nature Preserve
About the Business
Amboy Marsh Nature Preserve, located at 1701 Morman Road in Amboy, Illinois, is a park and tourist attraction that was purchased by the Illinois Audubon Society in 2012. This 302-acre wetland complex is a rare and fragile portion of the Green River Lowlands section of the Grand Prairie Division. The preserve features black oak sand savannas, sedge meadows, and dry sand prairie, providing diverse habitats for native flora and fauna.
The watery nature of Amboy Marsh makes it a unique and important environment, with springs, seeps, marshes, and wetlands supporting a variety of wildlife, including amphibians that rely on fishless ponds for breeding. Visitors to the preserve can enjoy birdwatching and may spot a variety of bird species, as documented in the Avian Breeding Community report for 2019.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, birdwatcher, or simply looking to explore a beautiful and diverse natural area, Amboy Marsh Nature Preserve is a must-visit destination in southeastern Lee County, Illinois.

"We loved this place, and indeed did see many rare plants. The sand prairies in particular provided a fascinating display. Very grateful it has been protected. The birds clearly love it, and did not disappoint. That said, the sheer volume of invasive plant species here was dismaying to see. We pulled out gallons of garlic mustard and others while walking along the trails. I do hope there can be a better management program put in place before it's too late. (We would volunteer to help if we were anywhere near the area.)"
"Peaceful area, ideal for a nature hike with plenty of birds for good bird watching. I plan to visit often. Thank you, Illinois Audubon society, for this wonderful gem."
"Fabulous! Go for a hike in all seasons, because you'll see something new each time. Some of the native plants are so infrequently seen that it might require extra research to identify them. Be sure to take a camera, to help you take it all in."
"Nice little place. Pleasant walk through out whole marsh area. Trails are nicely marked."
"Great place to take pictures of birds, dragonflies, and nature too!!"
