"Troy is an amazing and inspiring teacher for my middle school son. I highly recommend him. His individual attention, patience, and consistency helped my son grow musically and more confidently when performing and in sight reading. Troy helped my son get ready for his school’s band performance at Carnegie Hall NYC in March 2018 and recently the UIL band competition. My son was transitioning from Beginner band directly to Symphonic band. Through consistent lessons, positive feedback, encouragement, and practice, Troy was able to decrease my son’s stage fright and get him comfortable playing and sight reading on the advanced Symphonic level. Troy made sure my son had a strong drum foundation and sight reading while working with mallet pieces on the bells and vibraphone for Carnegie Hall and UIL. Troy’s easy going teaching style is a great fit working with my introverted analytical son. Troy is both hardworking and disciplined. He is very positive and gentle in feedback. He has extensive knowledge of teaching percussion and music. I am impressed with his advocacy for ear protection and ergonomics for percussionists. As a parent, I enjoy attending the lessons and seeing my son continue to progress with Troy. He is very good at refocusing my son when my son would get frustrated. Troy got my son back on track to learn and master the techniques customized to my son. He is very approachable and flexible when we had scheduling issues."
"Troy has been teaching my son for the past three years. He started when my son was a beginner and has progressed with him as he has become an experienced player. Throughout that time, Troy has pushed him but also encouraged him to keep progressing. Troy focuses in the lessons on fundamental development of drumming skills as well as understanding the musical styles that a drummer needs to be able to play in. He expects my son to practice and do the work, but he is never harsh and is always positive. Troy has great credentials as an instructor with a college education in music, a lot of experience as a drum instructor, and as a professional drummer. I highly recommend Troy as a drum teacher and music educator."
"Troy's been my teacher for a couple of years now, and I had very little experience when we began. I had tried drumming a couple years prior to working with him, but only for a few months, and I needed to start from the very beginning. I was intimidated and embarrassed to be an adult student among so many kids, but Troy helped me lose that embarrassment pretty quickly. It has been a great experience. As an adult, finding time to practice has been pretty difficult, but I think Troy tailors his approach to each student, so he's found a way to encourage and push me while still being understanding about my schedule. He knows a LOT about music, and when we come to different exercises in the book we're using, he can give me examples of the beat being used in popular music. When I'm struggling with something, he always seems to know exactly what I need to modify. And I'm so glad he had me focus on learning notation and rudiments when we first began. It's fun being able to read drum notation! Mastering an exercise is a very satisfying feeling. I think he has chosen some great books to use as well. You really get a solid foundation with Troy. I've thought about giving up the drums several times, because it's hard to make progress when I'm short on time, or energy, or plain old self-discipline, but Troy's encouragement and approach to teaching have contributed to my decision to continue learning."
"Troy is a very good instructor with a sound method that will ensure not only that you learn how to play the drums but also develop a solid foundation through proper drumming technique and music reading skills. He is knowledgeable and very patient, especially with new students starting from scratch. Highly recommended!"
"Troy is a knowledgeable and patient teacher. His structured lessons make use of well-known drum books at the beginning, allowing the student to see progress. The fact that he is a working drummer brings a depth to his teaching that only comes from extensive experience. I would definitely recommend him."
