Reviews of The Humanist Academy
"This is the best schooling system we had ever tried and I am so bummed we have to leave and put our kids in a different school. Not to worry, because we intend to help start the same Acton Academy style school where we are heading next. Yes we are that pleased with it!"
"We had our son attending the Humanist Academy since the sprint of 2017. At the time, we were looking for an alternative to public schooling, and chose the Humanist due the Acton model my wife and I had researched with figuring out our options. The first year seemed to go well. Our son was adjusting to the system the school had recommended, and our family worked through Acton model / socratic learning model, where students are asked to figure things out with little guidance. In his second year, he was promoted to a tier where he would be with older children and learn to work with them. It was around that time that we experienced a gradual, steady decline with our experience with the Humanist Academy. It got to the point where we had no choice but to pull him from the school before some serious issues we were experiencing would get any worse. Here are my main concerns: 1. His assigned Guide’s method of teaching was not suited to my son’s style of learning. I started seeing a change in his enthusiasm to go to school within the first month. He has historically been a child that seeks direct instruction from authority in the classroom, and the idea that he had to figure it out for himself was difficult for him to understand. 2. The 'integrity point' system the Humanist Academy used for students to self-regulate each other was (and still is) fundamentally flawed. A couple of students were asking for “integrity point” slips from my son at an average rate of 2 per day towards his last three months at the school. The overwhelming number of them (true or not) flatlined my son’s confidence in himself, as he simply gave up trying to defend himself from incidents that he may or may not have remembered. 3. There was (and still is) a dogmatic obsession with the Socratic method/Acton Academy model on the part of school leadership. I went to several parent-teacher conferences where they were more information sessions about the program than actually allowing parents to voice their concerns, clarify their understanding, and root the enthusiasm they initially had about the school and its approach to learning. 4. There are no checks and balances for bullying. I witnessed, firsthand, two older boys teasing or picking on my son during after school sessions and during morning basketball on two separate occasions. Both times, the supervising teachers were busy talking to themselves or looking at their phones. These incidents were never fully addressed by school administrators. 5. The Guides, by and large, are not trained educators. They come from alternative schooling, which suits the model of the school. However, now that we’re working with a teacher with 20 years experience in the public school system and a Masters in behavioral science, the difference is as clear as night and day. 6. My son’s academic performance declined in the final year he was there. I assumed that the work I was doing with him on reading, writing and math would be amplified by the guidance and study at the Humanist. Sadly, this was not the case. ----- I know that the school owner has the best of intentions with his school, and has made many, many sacrifices to get the Humanist Academy to where it is today. He was a friend to my son, and always was generous with his time to make sure we were listened to. I wish him all the success in the world with what he’s trying to achieve. Nevertheless, I’m posting this review to voice the concerns that were never fully addressed or seriously considered while my son attended the school. Furthermore, I would caution any family looking to invest their time, money and child’s academic growth with this particular academic institution of learning. I would strongly recommend making a choice based on first-hand facts rather than effective marketing campaigns or social media reviews generated by friends and family. I hope this review was helpful, and wish nothing but the best for the Humanist Academy."
"A wonderful community of learners, guides, and families instilling a love of learning and humanity in each other. Core skills (math, reading, etc.) are learned at the individual child's pace, quest-based learning intertwines traditional subjects into fun and interactive projects, daily Socratic discussions encourage deep thought and debate, and students are given the responsibility and freedom to control many aspects of their academic - and "Hero's" journey. On top of this - values of empathy, respect, integrity, gratitude and more are built into the structure. Amazing owner, director, guides (teachers). I consider myself lucky to be able to send my child here."
"Disruptive learning. Based on the Acton Academy model in Austin. Well rounded, alternative approach to learning - placing a lot of responsibilities on the children. My daughter looks forward to going every morning. The guided approach, hands on quest based learning, teamwork and freedom for exploration are unique. Good match for us."
"Blessed to be a part of such an amazing community. Students are always excited to learn here but they take it a step further by being in charge of their learning. The Socratic emphasis to foster critical thinking, self-paced Core Skills, life-oriented Quests that culminate in public exhibitions that are all student-led, and the vision of education to help find a calling and make an impact in society, are all just a few examples of this revolutionary program - affiliated with Acton Academy."
