Reviews of Esperanza Eating Disorders Center
"My daughter has been under the care of Esperanza, participating in both the adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Our experience with Esperanza has been nothing short of transformative. Their commitment to education and support has not only benefited my daughter but has also positively impacted our entire family. The emphasis on involving families in the treatment process has played a crucial role in her progress. I wholeheartedly recommend Esperanza to anyone dealing with the challenges of an eating disorder."
"I just finished reading an article called, “Typical-Atypical Interactions: One Patient’s Experience of Weight Bias in an Inpatient Eating Disorder Treatment Setting.” The author’s experience was horrifying to say the least when she sought treatment in a larger body. Reading it made me so grateful yet again for everyone who was at Esperanza while I was and Esperanza itself. There is no way I could have found true healing without your approach and weight neutrality regarding eating disorders. I can never thank you all enough for taking me on with such care, patience and kindness. Esperanza gave me the opportunity to save my own life and I will always hold deep, abiding gratitude for it."
"This place is absolutely amazing! I am a 16 year old patient currently at Esperanza in the adolescent program and have been for the past four and a half months. Throughout my recovery here I have had an incredible team that has helped me so much and truly wants the best for me. My therapist, Sam, has been able to help me with both ARFID and Anorexia as well as other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and OCD. She is such an approachable person who has been able to teach me skills and help me better understand myself and my conditions. The family therapist, Paul, is amazing at his job and really cares about how he can help relationships within the family. He has helped me a lot with being able to be more open and vulnerable with my parents. My Dietitian, Sarah, is highly qualified and very educated about eating disorders. She spends so much time working on weight restoration (for the patients that need it) and calculating the perfect and specific weight for each patient rather than just putting them in a general category based off of height, gender and age and assigning them to a weight like they were a statistic. All of the other staff are amazing people who care about their jobs that I have been able to make strong and trustworthy connections with. They are awesome at combatting diet-culture and reframing ED thoughts. Not to mention the community and connections I have been able to make with other patients. I have no doubt that I have made lifelong friends in this place. We also have specialized groups like yoga, cooking group and DBT groups that have been so helpful in my recovery. Esperanza also makes the family very involved in their loved ones recovery via family therapy, groups and family dinners. While this might seem to be time consuming it is worth it. If you really care about your child, their well-being, and hope for them to live a life free from an eating disorder than the cost of the time it takes for all of the meetings, etc. becomes so minuscule that it’s essentially nonexistent. After a patient is done with their partial hospitalization the program does intensive outpatient program where we come to the center for less hours and less days. It’s really nice that Esperanza does this because it helps the transition of going back to school and its basically a “practice” of what going back into the real world. Esperanza has truly saved me and changed my life forever. Thank you."
"EDITED TO ADD: healing from a severe mental health crisis, like an eating disorder, is not linear and can take a really long time to recover from. For success to happen, you need consistency and tools. At Esperanza, they not only give the teen patients tools, they give them to the caregivers as well. Expect to be involved in the care of your child including family counseling, dinners, dietician appointments, classes to help guide you through ED. This involvement will set you up for success when you get out of the program. Parents meet three times a week for class, followed by a family dinner. The classes before dinner are led by certified experts experienced in eating disorders to help to educate the parents on how to communicate effectively or to learn about diet culture. They facilitate conversations between parent/child and help us navigate through really hard conversations. Having a kid with an eating disorder can be so isolating, so the family dinner normalizes eating with others as well as teaches parents how to build a correct and balanced meal. Yes, it’s a ton of work and sacrifice, but we aren’t going to be there forever. I’d rather put the work in now than to bury my daughter because untreated eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate out of all mental health disorders. What we are learning now is helping us to have success when we get home. I can’t imagine trying to do this on my own with just the help of a doctor who isn’t specialized in ED. An experienced team is needed and that’s what Esperanza provides. ORIGINAL POST: Esperanza saved my 16 yo daughter’s life. She had been in patient twice and at another PHP prior to coming here and we were desperate for help. Dr Mengden and her team immediately looked at her complicated history with food and diagnosed her with ARFID, anorexia, orthorexia. Dissember and Dr Ales were so kind and helped with all of her medical issues. Sarah (dietician) was so patient with her as she learned to feel comfortable with food again. Paul (family therapist) and Sam (individual therapist) worked so hard to help reframe her thoughts (and mine) about life and relationships. The parents had classes, therapy, dietician appointments to help us support our teens. The whole team is amazing! They changed our lives for the better and I can never thank them enough. They helped me get my baby back."
"As a parent, I was very stressed and anxious about my toddler not eating. Like everywhere else I called, they only accept ages 13+, but December did not turn me away. She cared, she asked about my daughters condition and she quickly made a list of that would be able to help me. She called and verified for me. She was the light at the end of the tunnel for us. Thank you with the most sincerity."
