Gary's Restaurant 405 South State Street, Freeburg, IL 62243

"Tried Gary's for the first time ever, even though I have lived in the area for 30 yrs. Tried it because I miss good breakfast diner food and don't want to drive over the river. We chose to try the bfast buffet but should have just ordered specific items from the menu. The only things worthwhile to get seconds from the buffet were the biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, bfast meats, and French toast sticks. We tried all other items on the line and they were either dry or looked overcooked. We might have just gone at the wrong time as well. We are willing to give it another go next time. I'm looking to try the country fried steak and the waffles next time."

"I used to come here all the time as a kid with my grandmother. Service and food was great then. As a family we used to love the fried chicken buffet. Since years has passed, this place has been declining rapidly. It’s sad to see that the love that was put into this place has disappeared. The chicken buffet sits longer and longer without changing out food. Last time I was there, the chicken was completely cold from being out for so long. Asked the waitress when they would be bringing out fresh chicken, and she said she was told that she can’t request more chicken to be cooked until what was already out has been eaten. The eggs seem to have changed as well for the breakfast buffet. They went from being amazing scrambled eggs, to what appears to be powdered eggs where when you chew them, you can taste the non mixed powder in your mouth. It’s just sad seeing this place decline throughout the years. People have been more scarce, and with that, comes with price increases to try and make up for the customers they’ve lost. Smh. It was nice knowing you Gary’s."

"The bathrooms are too small for a wheelchair to fit through the door. Otherwise the food and the service are good."

"Came in on a Tuesday morning. I let them know we had 10 people and I thought the server was gonna cry. She said her help called out and it was just her, so as long as we were patient we'd be OK. The service was incredible. She put pots of coffee on the table so we didn't have to wait for refills and all the food was hot, as ordered and pretty quick. Great experience!"

"Good food, generous portions, at reasonable prices. Everything you could want from a diner. I definitely recommend it!"
