Reviews of Illinois Iron Furnace (National Historic Site)
"The history of the Iron Furnace is really interesting! There actually was a small town of around 100 near the furnace. Most of the men worked at the Iron Furnace. Some were farmers. The ladies stayed at home and took care of the home life of children and housework. There was even a school, post office, and hotel. I will go back!"
"First time seeing this. Really enjoyed being there. And seen the creek right by it"
"This was a cool side quest on our hiking weekend trip! Looked like a nice picnic spot, too. Something to be mindful of is the broken glass around the structure, especially the back side. We picked up some big pieces but saw tons of little ones all over that we just didn’t have time to clean up ourselves. Something to look out for if you take your kids or pets."
"Definitely back roads, we had to use the four wheel drive and take it slow as most of the roads weren't plowed. This stop was really back in the woods but had a great shelter and grill area for lunch."
"Really cool, definitely off every beaten path. Cell service will go out if you go here so have your map plotted before you go visit, some of the roads to it have blind turns or are dirt roads so it was a fun adventure finding this monument. The forge itself is huge, much bigger than I was expecting. Good place for a picnic too."
