Switzerland County Museum
About the Business
The Switzerland County Museum, located at 208 East Market Street in Vevay, Indiana, is a must-visit tourist attraction dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the history of Switzerland County. Established by the Switzerland County Historical Society in 1925, this museum houses a wide range of artifacts and documents that showcase the county's unique past.
The museum is home to the County Historical Museum, the River History Museum, and the Thiebaud Farmstead. Visitors can explore exhibits on Early Swiss Heritage, Veterans Remembered, Childhood Memories, Native Americans, Professions, and Domestic Arts. The museum also offers genealogy research information for those interested in tracing their roots.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts various events and programs such as Hay Days, A Country Christmas, Archaeology Day, All Hallows Eve, and Back to Basics Day Camp for kids. Special events like Barn Dances, Big Doins' Chautauqua, and Rural Heritage Tours provide a fun and educational experience for all ages.
The Thiebaud Farmstead, a beautifully restored 1850s Greek Revival home, is a highlight of the museum. Thanks to a successful capital campaign and generous contributions from local foundations and individuals, the historic home and Mormon Haypress have been preserved for future generations to enjoy.
With a dedicated Board of Directors and Executive Director leading the way, the Switzerland County Museum continues to be a hub of historical preservation and education in Indiana. Whether you're a history buff, genealogy enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun day out, the Switzerland County Museum has something for everyone to enjoy.

Reviews
"An excellent little museum that shows the history of steamboats on the Ohio River and the history of the first Swiss settlement in the United States. The lady at the front desk was amazingly helpful in helping me find the burial place of my family and extended family. The gift shop is amazingly inexpensive. And the people in general are fantastic."
"I did not have time to see the entire collection but did have a short tour led by the museum director. Learned about the "Hay King" of Switzerland County and his network of 200 hay barns. Also saw a working model of his patented hay press, which looked like a precursor of today's hay balers. Definitely worth a longer visit."
"Low key informational objects for living in the river. Laid back and enjoyable"
