About the Madera Canyon Trail Parking
Madera Canyon Trail Parking is located at the Davis Mountains Preserve in Fort Davis, Texas. This park is a rugged yet fragile sky-island refuge surrounded by the vast West Texas desert landscape. The Davis Mountains Preserve, established by The Nature Conservancy, covers nearly 33,000 acres and is home to diverse plant and animal species. The preserve is closed to the public for most of the year for research and conservation activities, but opens on select weekends for camping, hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. The Madera Canyon Trail is separate from the preserve and is open to the public year-round. Visitors can explore stunning landscapes, spot wildlife such as black bears and mountain lions, and enjoy the dark skies of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve. Reservations are required for guided day tours of the preserve, but not for open events. Explore this unique sky island in the heart of West Texas and connect with nature at Madera Canyon Trail Parking.

Reviews of Madera Canyon Trail Parking
"This is the trailhead for the 2.6 mile public trail overlooking Madera Creek and Chico Tank. The trail is open dawn to dusk 365. Two rest benches. Wildlife includes deer, elk, wild turkeys, coyotes, reptiles. A few cacti but mainly pinyon pine and grass savannah. Mexican mallard ducks often in tank during winter. Be alert for feral hogs and skunks. Camping is allowed in picnic area but not beyond trailhead. No restrooms."
"The trail took 2 hours with frequent stops to view birds. It was a peaceful hike as we were the only people on the trail on a Thursday morning in April. We saw whitetail deer, the typical sparrows, and a great horned owl. The photos are of an ash-throated flycatcher."
"Well kept trail with decent (but almost not noticable) elevation change for excellent views. Took a friend and myself only 1ish hour to complete the loop."
"Nice place to pull over for the night. Right next door to a nature conservancy that has a lovely two and a half mile trail. Nice level parking with concrete picnic tables, probably room for five maybe six RVs."
"What a wonderful fun trail. Kids had a great time. It was easy to do and very interesting. The views were amazing. Highly recommend"
