Reviews of McCoy's Building Supply
"Update 2/2/2024, updated to 4 stars: The store manager reached out to me and worked with me to arrange a materials return for the problem lumber. I had not asked for a manager to review the situation; he called me. His proactive work has done a lot to restore my hope for shopping at this store. He did not ask me to update my review, but I've chosen to do so anyway. The lumber market in the US is very strained at the moment, and it seems like lumber is being produced in a hurry and with reduced attention to quality. I've seen this at all stores, but I think it might seem more prominent at McCoy's because lumber is typically picked for the customer. I'm picky at other stores, so if I go home with bad lumber, that's kind of on me. It may be possible to hand-pick lumber at McCoy's, I am not sure. In any case, the manager working with me to return the material was the best outcome I could hope for at this time. Original Review 1/30/2024, 2 Stars: I really want to like this store. The indoor shopping section is tidy and well-organized, and the employees are generally pretty eager to help. I've had multiple bad experiences with lumber, though, and it's really put a bad taste in my mouth. The first time, I purchased about a dozen 2x4s for a small project. The lumber was torn, knotty, and waned badly. I was disappointed that the yard worker picked such poor lumber, but I hoped it was a fluke. The second time, I had over a thousand dollars in 20 ft lumber delivered, and it was poor quality. Lots of knots running the full width of the board, wane/bark on the edges, and most lumber developed splits within a week, despite being carefully stored. This lumber was priced at a premium (50% over the Orange Store) and just wasn't good. I needed it for its full length span, so I couldn't use this lumber for this purpose. When I inquired about replacement or refund, all they could offer was for me to purchase new lumber, and they would deliver it and take back the old lumber, and "inspect" it to determine if they could give me a refund or not. At this point, I don't trust the quality of lumber they'd be replacing it with, and I'd rather just return the wood. I live 5 minutes from the store, but I don't have a vehicle large enough to transport 20 foot lumber, so this process is a huge hassle. The last time I purchased wood from them, it took a *very* long time to get it from the lumber yard, and most pieces were again waned or torn, and developed splits in about a week. The yard worker was surly and did not seem like he would be receptive to re-picking new wood for me. I don't know if it's a supplier problem or something else, but I no longer feel I can trust the lumber from this "lumberyard". I wish I could say that I would choose them over the big box store in Georgetown, but at least there I can take my time to pick lumber that meets my needs, and it's significantly cheaper."
"I always enjoy McCoys everyone is always welcoming decent prices i go there for most everything for my projects electrical, plumbing painting ,drywall, outdoor materials ,keys etc...."
"Started rough. Bought 18 boards and waited in the yard to be loaded for too long. However, once I got help they were very friendly and helpful. They even helped me with my creative loading solution to carry boards that were much too long for my vehicle. I give them 5 stars bc no other lumber yard would work that hard for 1 customer buying just 18 boards."
"Customer service is not a priority here. Customers (myself included) waiting to pick up materials from yard. Employees futzing around on forklifts while waiting more than 20 minutes to receive materials."
"Prices are on par with most building supply stores however service on the other hand sucks! It must be a requirement to be moody to work their because no one ever smiled or offered assistance. When I had questions I was answered with very short replies and a temperament like I was bothering them."
