"About 11-12 years ago, I began having occasional pain in the back of my neck, along with/or all around my head, including my face. The pains worsened and became more frequent over the next 2 years until they were totally debilitating. Accompaning the pain, were flu-like symptoms of chills, weakness and nausea. The facial pain felt like a terrible sinus infection. Overall, I could not function for hours until pain medication barely relieved an episode. I had heard about TMJ issues over the years and wondered if this was causing my pain. But when asking my general dentist about TMJ, the idea was basically shot down. Desperate to find help, I located Dr. Hurme's office in San Antonio, a 3+hour drive from my home. His specialized dental expertise was in treating pain resulting from TMJ. From my very first visit, which included photos and head x-rays, Dr. Hurme and his staff were most professional (highly skilled), congenial and genuinely concerned about helping me. Dr. Hurme is one of the nicest medical/dental professionals I've ever visited. His quiet, but very friendly, demeanor has an excellent calming affect while he expertly attends to my needs. From the first fitting of a mouth apparatus, my pain immediately was lessened in severity and frequency. I have also been taught in the clinic numerous ways in strengthening my neck muscles. As my jaws have continued the journey through corrective realignment over the past eight years, Dr. Hurme has remained the same: kind, encouraging and always expertly prepared to attend to my next stage of the process. If I'd not received his help 8 years ago, I know I would be totally dysfunctional at this point. Instead, at the age of 68, I have a very busy and active, healthy life. Between the hidden mouth apparatus pieces I wear day and night and the neck muscle exercises I do, my occasional and milder headaches are quite manageable. It is a slow process of time and steps, but now my visits are only twice a year, and things are greatly improved. If you have been suffering with debilitating headaches for years, i recommend seeing Dr. Hurme. It's worth a visit to find out if it is a TMJ problem. I believe this is more common than not. "I have had a very positive experience with Dr. Hurme's practice. I had issues with my throat and difficulty swallowing. I went to my primary care Dr. and was referred to two ENT Drs with no help. I finally went back to my Dr. who advised maybe I should visit a TMJ specialist. At this point I was very concerned because I had lost 20 pounds in a month of not eating solid food.
