Reviews of REI
"I'm very hard to fit, so I was very pleasantly surprised when the man in the boot department was so knowledgeable and so patient that I now have a good pair of boots that fit great and look good. What a pleasant experience!"
"This REI is why brick and mortar stores are dying. Went there to buy an electric bike today. The saleswoman Lisa was friendly enough at the start. She unlocked the bike to let me sit on it. I straddled the bike and got comfortable with both feet planted firmly on either side and told her, "I'm good you can let go now." Despite this, she continued to grip both sides of the handlebars as if her life depended on it. Seriously, her knuckles were white as chalk. I thought maybe because I'm Latina? She stood squarely in front of me, her eyes boring down at me. After a couple of seconds of uncomfortable silence, she said, "You can take it out for a drive if you want." I was so anxious at that point that I rejoined, "Will you be holding on to it outside too?" Okay, that was sarcasm on my part and I own that. I simply wanted her to give me a bit of space because she was making me so uncomfortable. After I made that comment she told me it was policy to hold the bikes while customers are trying them. I told her that it was okay, but could she just step back a little bit. Instead of showing understanding, she accused me of being "aggressive." I understand a company having a safety policy, but is there no room for personal space or customer anxiety? Being called aggressive for voicing my discomfort felt like insult onto injury. I did not raise my voice or do anything remotely aggressive. Unless sarcasm is now considered aggression--possible, but that's a whole other discussion. I spoke to Carl the manager, he was compassionate but suggested I ride the bike next week when the store wasn't so busy (Labor day weekend and all). I wanted to purchase the bike today. But it's fine, I can find plenty of places that orient themselves to their customer. In my case this REI in Santa Fe just isn't one of them."
"As a bike shop employee myself, I can not in good faith recommend this places bike shop. I was visiting Santa Fe from out of town, so I borrowed a friends mountain bike. The brakes needed a lever bleed (a two minute job). Brought it here because it was the only place open at the hour. Two people were sitting behind the bike shop desk, neither of them doing any work. I told them I needed a lever bleed and one of them seemed like they didn’t even know what I was talking about. The other said it would be a few days. Again, neither of them were working on bikes despite wearing mechanic shop aprons. This is a quick, on the spot job that should be able to be done if they are not doing anything at the moment. Heck, I could’ve done it right there and then if I had access to the tools. Frustrated because I did not have multiple days to wait, I asked if they sold brake bleed kits. The employee that didn’t even know what a brake bleed was “looked up” if they sold them on her phone. After mysteriously scrolling for thirty seconds, she told me they don’t even stock them. So apparently, this place not only doesn’t stock pretty common bike repair items, but they don’t even know basic bike maintenance . Cool. Ended up finding a friend of a friend that had the tools at his house and did it myself in five minutes."
"Not one of my favorite REI locations, yet, that said, staff since day one to present are consistently excellent, engaging, genuinely helpful, knowledgeable. This location is well staffed, which I cannot say about certain other REI locations. My primary criticism is concerning parking. Arriving at a retail and restaurant district and needing to PAY for parking is certainly a slap in the face. This is thankfully not NYC, so why are we paying for parking when New Mexico does not even own the parking meters, which by the way, often are not functional! In that case, While I’m attempting to enjoy my shopping and dining experience, it’s rushed, as I don’t want to return to a parking ticket for a space I was unable to pay for due to some Russian corporation’s negligence. Santa Fe can do better than this."
"Love it! Great place for outdoor enthusiasts to binge their money and time. The REI garage sales are the way to go for finding great deals. The store is never very packed so it is always very nice. For example the backpack section is great because help you size packs for your torso and other needs."
