Brick House
About the Business
Brick House, located in Brodnax, Virginia, United States, is a historic plantation house that was originally built in 1831-33 by the Brodnax family. The house was later remodeled into a Romantic Revival mansion, influenced by regional architecture and designs published by architect Samuel Sloan. The airy portico, inspired by the Doric portico of Berry Hill, gives the house a distinctive Italianate character. The house features moldings and brackets that show stylistic similarities to the works of Jacob Holt, a prominent Southside builder/architect. This impressive composition is a vestige of antebellum patrician lifestyle in Brunswick County and the region.
Although many properties listed in the registers are private dwellings and not open to the public, Brick House can be viewed from the public right-of-way. The Virginia Landmarks Register, National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places, and National Historic Landmark have recognized the historical significance of Brick House.
The Department of Historic Resources (DHR) has played a key role in securing legal protection for over 700 historic places, including battlefield lands, and has stimulated over $4.2 billion in private investments through historic tax credit incentives, revitalizing communities across Virginia.
