About the Business

The Brookeville Historic District, located at 5 High Street in Brookeville, Maryland, was founded in 1794 by Richard Thomas, Jr. and his wife Deborah Brooke Thomas. This 19th-century rural settlement is of great historical significance, situated approximately 18 miles north of Washington, DC. The town covers about 60 acres and is home to 55 individual properties with an estimated population of 135 residents.
During the War of 1812, Brookeville played a crucial role as a refuge for residents fleeing the burning of Washington, DC by British forces. On August 26, 1814, President James Madison sought shelter in Brookeville after leaving the capital ahead of the British troops. His brief stay in the town earned Brookeville the title of "U.S. Capital for a Day", a legacy that is still proudly celebrated today.
The Brookeville Planning Commission and Town Commissioners hold regular meetings to address town matters, with the next meetings scheduled for April 8, 2024, and May 7, 2024, respectively. The town recently passed a parking ordinance, which can be viewed on their website along with information on how to file a parking complaint.
For any inquiries or to report a parking issue, residents can contact the Town of Brookeville via phone at 301-570-4465 or email at clerk@townofbrookevillemd.org. Visit the Brookeville Historic District to explore its rich history and charming community.
