Orchard Knob Reservation
About the Business
Orchard Knob Reservation is a historic park and tourist attraction located at 306 North Orchard Knob Avenue in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. This site holds significant historical importance as it was the location of a pivotal battle during the Civil War. On November 23, 1863, Union troops led by General George H. Thomas formed battle lines in the valley below Orchard Knob, facing Confederate soldiers positioned on the rocky mound. The Confederates had constructed rifle pits around the knob to besiege the city of Chattanooga.
Despite being outnumbered, the Union troops advanced towards Orchard Knob, engaging in a fierce battle with the Confederates. Eventually, the Union forces pushed the Confederates back to the base of Missionary Ridge, marking a significant victory. General Thomas J. Wood's successful capture of the enemy's entrenchments demonstrated the strength and determination of the Union army.
Orchard Knob's strategic importance was further highlighted when General Grant used it as his forward observation post during the Union assault on Missionary Ridge on November 25. Today, visitors can explore the historic grounds of Orchard Knob Reservation and learn about the events that unfolded during this crucial moment in American history.

Reviews
"The history here is amazing! Imagine Grant and his staff standing there glassing missionary Ridge wondering why his legions are going past the first rifle pits."
"From wonderful 360° views of Chattanooga, and many beautiful monuments representative of the American civil war, Orchard Knob is a nice place to go and relax and take in the views! Protect our national parks."
"General Sherman stood on this spot and this was the location of the beginning of The Battle of Chattanooga. Very sad location as it is surrounded by old run down neighborhood and is not well kept but should be a premium site if ware a history buff."
"Some great views of Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge. The downside is that the site is a mix of good shape and unkempt; not much in the way of infrastructure (e.g. no dedicated parking or restrooms). The surrounding has also seen better days."
"The park was not greatly taken care of when we stopped- it was weedy and it looked like it might be the local night time beer drinking spot. However, it changed my understandingof the Battles around Chattanooga. I had been and read about them several times but I felt like I understood better once I had been to Orchard Knob. It is a very good vantage point to take in the terrain of the area."
