"Jim Fleming was my late sister's wealth manager. She was a woman of considerable acumen and experience who did everything possible to streamline my responsibilities as primary executor of her estate. And she succeeded in that goal with one important exception -- working with Mr Fleming. My experience of this individual has been little short of a train wreck, deeply marred by his uninformed statements which had to be walked back, gaslighting explanations wrt the mistakes made and his blatantly naive asset allocation decisions. 1) Earlier this year, Mr Fleming was instructed to 'lock down' my sister's portfolio to protect its value from imminent market risks. For Mr Fleming, this meant moving out of stocks and into indexed ETFs/mutual funds, asset classes which remain vulnerable as they are marked to the market. At best these were naive decisions since, just in the last few months, the value of her portfolio has declined by about 15%. Other asset classes were available, apparently unbeknownst to him, which would have truly sheltered her portfolio from the current market traumas and volatility. 2) As primary executor of her estate, I've incurred expenses wrt funeral services, legal fees, etc. These fees were agreed to and signed off on by Mr Fleming with his acknowledgement that they would be deducted from the allocations being made to the other beneficiaries. There is a paper trail to this effect. For whatever reasons, their permission to reimburse was neither granted nor obtained. Now, I am responsible for circling back with them, schnoor's hat in hand, to recover said costs. His explanations for his mistake made absolutely no sense at all. 3) It's been weeks since she passed and her estate has been unwound. Yet, my account's assets remain in her name, foiling my ability to pull them over to a different wealth management entity. Is this incompetence? Or just an EJWM business decision to delay distribution, cumulating them along with other such penumbral accounts, thereby increasing the money making potential of their 'float', a kind of multi-billion dollar sludge fund on the overnight markets? All in all, a very difficult and disappointing performance by Mr Fleming."
