"The experience was awesome! I work for YAP and took a couple of my kids. We weren't allowed to take any photos inside but it was very informative"
"Our tour guide was the best. This house has been restored with painstaking detail and filled with incredible artifacts. We felt like we were back in time visiting Walt. Definitely worth a trip!"
"It’s interesting to see the place Whitman spent many years of his life at- through health and death. The tour involved a conversation on the history of Camden. Rick and Steve were awesome and we really enjoyed our time there- 2 hours flew by!"
"I was looking forward to touring the house of America's most important poet of the 19th century. My husband and I never made it inside the museum yesterday. It is great that the museum does not charge for tours of the house. However, the man living next door to the museum was sitting on his front stoop while publicly intoxicated, yelling at residents down the block, and threatening them with a handgun in his pocket. We did not know if the gentleman would damage our vehicle while we were inside Whitman's house. I did not see anyone else waiting to tour the house. For the safety of our own lives, we decided to cancel our plans. The state of NewJersey, which owns this historical home, should ensure all.visitors feel safe while parking and touring this major visitor attraction of New Jersey and the city of Camden. Otherwise, they are losing individuals and families who would want to learn more about Walt Whitman and the house he lived in. It was a shame that we never had the opportunity."
"Call ahead to be sure that the house will be open, and they will have you make an appointment since it's a personally guided tour. The tour guide meets you out front and provides information on Whitman's history, as well as some history on the surrounding area. You're able to see most rooms in the house, each of which are filled with Whitman's personal belongings, with the tour ending in the yard. The house is beautifully maintained and set up. There is no photography permitted within the house. The tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable of Whitman, his family, friends, and the surrounding area. Definitely worth the trip!"
