Reviews of Smithsonian's National Postal Museum
"This is my favorite museum I’ve ever been to! I’ve been to so many museums, and this is the best, one in terms of being interactive, informational, and interesting. There are a bunch of cute things that you can take, like free postcards in this one area where you can write on them (you need to stamp and delivered on your own), some old stamps from the past that you can choose, there is a limit of six. You can take a picture at a kiosk and make your own stamp, too! There was a typing game and mail sorting games. Definitely great for kids and adults, too :)."
"So, upstairs is sort of the history of stamps. We enjoyed that and the beautiful architecture. Especially fun was picking out 6 stamps to take home. Downstairs was more the history of the postal service. 2/3 of it reminded me of the new spy museum, info panels on the wall, light on "things" to look at, sort of ADHD. The other 1/3 was enjoyable. Gift shop was very nice, bought some stamp covers and some field notes with Ruth Bader Ginsburg stamps on them."
"If you are in Washington DC, you should check out the VERY interesting and surprisingly cool National Postal Museum! I recommend the FREE guided tour to start, because you’ll NEVER be able to get it all yourself. They even give out free collecting stamps to start peoples collections! This museum is flying under the radar - it’s very organized, not too big, and contains so many interesting stories…I will have to go back! Plus cute gift shop!"
"A hidden gem off the National Mall, but right next to Union Station. This museum is a larger than it appears. The lower level is HUGE. Right now there is an amazing Baseball exhibit going on, bi-lingual by the way. The history of not just stamps but that of also the mail, how it started, how it was moved around and so much more is here to be seen. The staff are so excited to help you with finding a specific interest or explaining the history of the building, who the architect was, or even why the DC Post Office was located in this exact spot(it was for direct access to the trains back in the day). Well worth a stop in, no lines, access by street parking, parking garage, Metro or even the Train."
"Did not know stamps could be so interesting. One of the smaller and more underrated Smithsonians out there, but worth stopping by. Literally just across the street from Union Station. Interesting information on the history of some stamps (you can even take 6 stamps home for free!) And the history of the postal service and how it has evolved over all. Wish there was a bit more on the Pony Express and the earlier history of the postal service. There is also a post office in the museum if you need to send some mail out."
