General William Hart House
About the Business
The General William Hart House, located at 350 Main Street in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, is a historic museum showcasing one of the earliest houses in the area. Built in 1767 for General William Hart and his bride, Esther Buckingham, the house reflects the wealth and sophistication of its original owner. General Hart was a prosperous merchant involved in the West Indies trade and played a significant role in the Revolutionary War.
The house features Georgian architectural influences, with nine-window façade, corner fireplaces, wainscoting, and other elegant details. The U.S. Department of the Interior has recognized the General William Hart House by listing it on the National Register of Historic Places.
Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the artifacts, the Hart Family, and the history of Old Saybrook. The house also has a separate kitchen or “keeping” room, four bedrooms with corner fireplaces, and an attic that was used as dormitory facilities during the 19th century.
The museum is run by a dedicated board of members, including President Marie McFarlin and Vice President Wayne Harms. Visitors can explore the rich history of the General William Hart House and gain insight into life in early New England.
