"I was not going to post anything but at the recommendation of friends decided to start being more open about my experiences with Deb. Deb is extremely kind, extremely gentle, and her family experience lends itself to having compassion for trans people. But she will absolutely gatekeep your healthcare. She will deny you letters if you do not meet her particular and narrowly defined version of transition, regardless of circumstances. There are therapists who will not do this, who understand that your healthcare is more important than the Song and Dance for the Cis for letters. If you do see her, tell her immediately that you are living consistently as your preferred gender and do not ever tell her your timeline. She is particularly callous about this. When you protest, she will threaten you with hospitalization. In the initial stages of my transition, she never once mentioned that informed consent for HRT was an option. I could have started hormones 4 months earlier, but she made me feel as if I had to go through her and get her letter in order to see a doctor. In addition, the doctor she recommends does not know how to transition transfemmes and is hopelessly behind the times on trans medicine. I had a problem that we only discovered because I became my own advocate and demanded a particular test that could have held up my transition for years if it had gone undetected. When I explained why this test was necessary, this doctor dismissed me. I have still not found a therapist yet I am ready to speak to because I don't know who I can trust anymore after my experiences with Deb. I'm sorry, but people have a right to know."
