"Northeastern Illinois University is a vibrant learning and research community, with its Main Campus on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Northeastern Illinois University is a public university in Chicago, Illinois. NEIU serves approximately 9,000 students in the region and is a Hispanic-serving institution. The main campus is in the community area of North Park with three additional campuses in the metropolitan area. The African and African American Studies (AFAM) minor is the study, research, interpretation and dissemination of knowledge about Africans both on the continent of Africa and in the Diaspora. Interdisciplinary in both conception and practice, the AFAM Program is designed to critically examine the structure, organization, contributions and perspectives of Africa and its peoples throughout the Diaspora. The AFAM program has built an extensive collection of audio-visual materials, which can be used in classes or for special projects. Our AFAM film collection includes items in VHS format, as well as recent documentaries and feature films in DVD format, that relate to the theme of our program. Our AFAM book collection also contain books from world renowned authors to Northeastern Illinois University's very own unparalleled faculty. Throughout the years the African and African American Studies Program sponsor a number of events within the program and collaboratively with other programs at Northeastern Illinois University and beyond. The Black Male Achievement (BMA) Fellowship is an innovative Fellowship for individuals who are dedicated to improving the life outcomes of black men and boys in the United States. Founded and supported in partnership with the Open Society Foundations since 2012 the BMA Fellowship is the first fellowship program in the world for social entrepreneurs who are starting up new and innovative organizations in the field of black male achievement. The Scholarships Office promotes and awards University scholarship funds to deserving students. The goal is to assist in lessening the financial burden that many students seek to overcome.
