Reviews of The Neurological Institute & Specialty Centers
"I [25F] was seen by Dr. Raul Guevara, and I'm only writing this review for the sake of others looking for a neuro-ophthalmologist. The choice is up to each individual person, but I would strongly recommend going elsewhere or at least getting a second opinion. This was my experience: [Long backstory short, I was initially referred to Dr. Guevara for an abnormal visual field test. In the meantime, I had a Brain MRI ordered for me that showed several tumors, including one potentially causing the issue. I was then seen by a neurosurgeon, who recommended that I keep the appointment with Dr. Guevara, especially because it would be very beneficial to repeat the visual field test in both eyes.] When I informed Dr. Guevara about this, he became very defensive. He told me repeatedly that my visual field test results were “normal" despite what others doctors had said, he kept saying "I decide what tests my patients do," and said that he "won't let a neurosurgeon tell him what to do." He said "why would someone order an MRI for this" and that a "neuro-ophthalmologist would never do that." He even went as far to say that "these are found incidentally all the time," which is absolutely not true in a 25-year old woman; it's incredibly rare. He wanted to go ahead and dilate my eyes and start the eye exam, but I asked once more if I could please first do the visual field test that the neurosurgeon asked me to repeat (for reference, it's just a 10-minute test that could even be administered by an assistant with the click of a button), and I wouldn't be able to do it with dilated eyes. The machine was sitting right there in the room. Dr. Guevara then went on about how he has "over 20 years of experience" and he said that he was "quite offended" that I even asked and that he “doesn't need a neurosurgeon telling him how to do his job." He then suggested we cancel the appointment, so we did and I left. If you have the means to do so, PLEASE try and get in with the University of Chicago (Dr. Nichols), Northwestern, or Rush (Dr. Mizen), at least for a second neuro-ophthalmology opinion. It may take a while to get in, but I really would not trust this doctor's opinion alone. This next part is just my speculation: If had to rely on him for a Brain MRI order, I truly wonder if 1) I'd get it or 2) he'd even refer me to neurosurgery at all. I obviously can't know for sure, but a different review below said that their teenage daughter was not told she had tumors on her MRI until her 6-month follow up. While I can't confirm that, I do believe it. I cannot speak for the rest of the Neurological Institute & Specialty Centers. The receptionist was kind, although she appeared wary about Dr. Guevara being quite "particular" when I asked questions. The assistant was looking at me like I was crazy for asking what tests I'd be doing that day, but I brushed it off. Their director was empathetic when I raised my concerns to her. Disclaimer: I know that everyone's experience is different, but this was mine. My only goal is that hopefully this review can help someone else advocate for themselves and make an informed decision!"
"All about money and don't care about patients and they took a week off here just recently did not notify none of the patients that needed refills all they do is give medication and talk on a microphone to save they record of giving the medication they don't even no about and canceling my children from seeing the doctor with our accomodations of disability s w minor children and school hours as well not considete of that after going here many years later this is the end result below cold out there always fresh start else were they double bill for appointments plus medication. As well and don't wanna accommodate clients needs"
"I was surprised by all the negative reviews. I've been a patient of Dr Cristea for a few years now and he has been great in helping me managing my herniated discs. Maybe other patients had bad experiences with the other doctors there, but I recommend Dr Cristea if you're having any neurological or spinal issues."
"An Internet Ad hooked me up with The Neurological Center for TMS, and told me that my insurance would pay for it, which they will not. Drove an hour and a half to Merrillville and spoke with Dr. Salberg, who was very nice, and explained that my insurance would NOT cover it, but reccomended someone that it will cover. Additionally, he suggested a few meds I might try. Disappointing, but still a fruitful visit."
"The doctors @Neurological Institute have changed my life in many positive ways. They have multiple neurological specialists at this location and I’m able to have all my docs in one place for my multiple needs. There’s even a lab there if blood work is needed. The ladies that check you in and out are so awesome. I have not had to sit and wait for a long time either. Ive been with this facility since 2015 and have never had an issue."
