Reviews of Douglas Tomb State Historic Site
"This is one of the most underrated and least visited monuments in Chicago, which is very sad, given the stature of Stphen Douglas. Hw was foundational in getting the railroads to come through Chicago, spurring development. Of course, his political role was larger than his actual stature. The Lincoln-Douglas debates are still studied today. He bested Lincoln, in 1858, to become our Senator, but lost, in 1860, to become President. Despite his stare rights stance, he fully supported Lincoln and the war against slavery. Due to his indirectly owning slaves, thru his wife, some want to erase him from the history books. That is disingenuous and very undemocratic. He is a man worthy of honor. His tomb sites on a miniscule portion of what had been a vast estate. The monument is designed by Leonard Wells Volk, who also did work for Lincoln. It is a bit of work to visit, but if you do so, you will be well rewarded, not to mention part of an elite group who've actually seen it up close."
"Not exactly the first thing that you would expect to find when you're thinking about the shorefront in Chicago. But this is a very well kept area, and it is really well marked out especially with information plaques."
"Great historical site hidden away in Chicago. Definitely worth a visit if you're on the lakefront path heading south. It's easy to access with the new 35th Street Pedestrian Bridge."
"The tomb of IL senator Stephen A. Douglas is below the column. You can see the sarcophagus made out of Vermont marble with the inscription of his last words "Tell my children to obey the law and uphold the constitution". Douglas died in 1861 written out by his presidential race in 1860 where he lost against Abraham Lincoln. It is a serene place with lovely old trees. Nice place to just rest or mediate for a while."
