Reviews of Medical Behavioral Hospital of Indianapolis
"This place was awful. I can speak as someone who was on the "inside". The day I arrived, I didn't receive dinner. Even after asking repeatedly, I got nothing. Eventually, another patient *note not a care provider but a patient* grabbed me a bag of chips. I was able to get a couple more bags from the staff but no dinner and I got to go through the whole night with awful hunger pangs. I didn't receive either of my two daily medications, including my thyroid medication. They did weirdly enough give me repeated doses of a benzodiazapine that I normally only used sparingly and as needed (like a couple times a week). Were they just trying to keep me sedated? I don't know. The staff outside of one nurse was incredibly rude and borderline abusive. At one point, I witnessed another patient say "can you guys at least pretend to give a s*** about us?" Multiple other patients confided in me about how much "this place sucks." My physical disability was not respected at all and nurses even went so far as to doubt it and try to force me to do tasks I am physical incapable of doing without risk of injury or worsening of my condition. All we get is a tiny up of water and some more tiny cups of liquid at meals. I was dehydrated for my stay and resorted to cupping water in my hands from my bathroom sink. There is also zero to do. I understand for safety reasons there has to be a limit on what is provided for the patients, but most resorted to just walking up and down the aisle all day with some naps in between. For a bedbound person like I was, that meant I got to lie in bed and stare at the wall. Riveting. I was attacked by another patient though to their credit, one of the nurses took one on the chin for me so that's where they get their one and only star. My wife was not contacted at all and didn't get through until multiple attempts calling. Blessedly, I was a voluntary admit so I had the power to go "I'm leaving, my wife is picking me up. See ya." My heart breaks for patients who are there on court order and can't leave. I understand that acute mental care is a difficult and thankless job. But I would be surprised if anyone came out of this place better than they were going in. I take that back. I'm sure they come out better because while inside they realize how much worse life can get and thus develop a new found appreciation for their life. I know I did. If you have any other options, do *not* send your loved ones here."
"This is a horrible facility. DO NOT send your family members here, let alone yourself. The staff here are not qualified to be taking care of patients with mental illness, let alone with a stable mind. The patients here are severely underfed and will go days without water. They are lied to about medicine they are receiving and are told it’s “Tylenol” when it’s actually a sedative. The medical professionals that are supposed to engage with patients here, and work on a treatment plan with them, are rarely present. There are no consistently scheduled group meetings or activities with patients throughout their days during their stay, therefore they have very few coping mechanisms/healing strategies to lean on while in the institution. They are left to sulk and drown in their own chaos. There is a deaf client here that requires ASL communication, and does not receive it as no staff are able to speak ASL. They have been imprisoned at the Medical Behavioral Hospital of Indianapolis for SIX months. This is not what mental health advocates have fought decades for. Shut this place down—DO BETTER."
"This place is good, the staff care, my relative liked the nurse Diana, grading on a curve overall because every hospital is understaffed. Relative was able to call me most every day (I am POA). Front desk lady Jaz was great as well. Patients can walk around out of their room to a TV room, and get out of their room to eat. You can visit 1 hour a time, any day, anywhere from 1 to 4, limited by the nature of the place."
"I almost didn’t agree to transporting my 93 year old aunt who suffers from dementia to this facility because of all the horrible reviews but the care facility where she resides recommended them so I agreed….and I’m glad I did. Krista in registration, Tanya in Social Services, and nurses Liberty, Mary and Erin all provided excellent care; not only to the patient but also to the family. As a family dealing with our loved ones dementia our experience and needs at the facility were different than the family dealing with addiction but ours was a 5 Star experience for sure!"
"I would not recommend this facility to anyone ever. I will post every day a bad review until someone calls and speaks to my family regarding the falls my loved one has sustained since going here just five days ago, including the broken nose he received two days ago from "falling" out of a chair. He is post-stroke and was only to be evaluated. Now he has COVID-19 which he did not have before arriving here either from another hospital. Upon our arrival, to observe the facility, we were denied access because visiting hours were over. [we'd driven two and a half hours, and his mother is paralyzed]. She was hung up on five times at the door and no one was even there to speak to regarding all these concerns. For a 65-bed facility on a Sunday afternoon, there were only eight cars in the employee parking area. We also witnessed an employee speeding out of the parking lot five minutes after requesting to speak to administrators. Every day until this is rectified I will post a bad review, The next time I will post videos or phone call recordings with my review. The state of Indiana should be ashamed of themselves for allowing a facility such as this to remain open. Quit being bought and put people first like they should be."
