"My brother Kim just spent 52 days at Kindred trying to wean off a ventilator. Today, August 15, 2023 he left Kindred as a success story! While any hospital stay has rough patches and things that get handled differently or less quickly than they would at home, I have many good things to say about this LTAC (long-term acute care) facility. First of all, no one knows what an LTAC is until you or a loved one needs it. It is NOT a nursing home! Most rehab facilities won’t take patients on a ventilator, so this is an interim type of facility and from here, patients will go to a skilled nursing facility if they can’t wean off the vent or to acute rehab if they can get off the vent. Acute rehab’s goal is to prepare them to go home and finish recovery there. After 30 days in ICU, Kim was having a tough time getting off the vent. The hospital where he spent his first 30 days had done all they could do for him, but he still needed more time. So reluctantly but without another choice, we scoured Google and other sources we could find for the best and closest LTAC. It was scary and we knew nothing and had almost no time to make a decision due to insurance. Sadly the closest facility was a little more than two hours’ drive away from home, but it was also the one with the best reviews. So Kindred Hospital on 10th Street in Indianapolis became our first choice. The first few days for Kim were really rough. Up to this point, our family made sure someone was with him almost all the time - day and night - while he was in intensive care. But Kindred did not allow overnight visitors. It was a big adjustment and scary for all of us. Naturally, we worried about the care Kim would get while we weren’t there. We were left with no choice but to trust the staff to care for him without our watchful eyes to ensure his care was as good as it could be. They exceeded our expectations. Kindred is an amazing place because of the people who work there. Because of Kim’s specific situation, the respiratory team was the most crucial. Lisa Sue, Jason, Joyce, Chalice and the rest of the team continuously tried and tested Kim’s ability to have a little less support each day. Some days were successful and some were not. On the night we came to Kindred, Jason was the respiratory therapist who told us, “This is not a linear journey. You will have good days and less good days. That’s OK and expected. You just have to keep looking forward and start each day as a new chance to have a good day.” Great advice that proved true for Kim. Each RT had their own unique style and different ideas to try. They were always very encouraging while never overpromising. They communicated well with each other and the rest of the care team. I cannot thank them enough for not giving up and getting Kim over the hump! The nursing staff was frequently in Kim’s room to try whatever they could to keep him comfortable. It isn’t easy when you’re in a bed for 82 days!! Elizabeth, Ruby, Makaya, Marcos, Deja, and many whose names I cannot remember made the minutes, hours, days, weeks and months bearable and even managed to get Kim to give up a smile every now and then. The physical therapy team, the speech and swallow team, the docs who saw him daily and especially David who kept all the docs informed and was a great listener all personally contributed to Kim’s successful outcome. One person in particular - Anna - told us she always treats her patients like she would want someone treating her family member in honor of her dad. Thank you Anna. I owe a special thank you to Dr. Choudhary (sorry if I misspelled) for his willingness to wait a few more days to see if Kim would continue to improve. He did. My advice to others looking for an LTAC: Visit before you decide if possible. If not, read reviews. They tell the best and worst stories. Most importantly be present every day if you can. Get to know the staff. Ask questions. Respectfully push back when needed. Remember the staff are people too. Thank them for every trip they make and mean it. Kindness and appreciation go a long way."
