"I lived on Sandy Hook from the time I was 9 years old until I was 13. It was the best place to live. What's not to love?? 2 blocks from the beach, cool buildings to explore, which brought the added excitement of trying not to get caught inside. The Coast Guard station used to host cheap screenings of movies on the weekends and there were a lot of other Park Service and "Coastie" kids to play with. On hot, muggy summer nights my dad used to take us through Battery Potter just to do a "security check". It was wonderfully cool inside and allowed for a much needed and much loved break from the heat. One of my favorite memories of Sandy Hook."
"Battery Potter is located in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. It was one of the first two batteries built on the Sandy Hook peninsula. Construction began in 1890 and finished in 1894, so it actually pre-dates Fort Hancock, which was authorized in 1895 for the purpose of providing housing for the soldiers stationed at Potter and the Mortar Battery. Potter closed in 1906 because its weapons had become obsolete"
