Reviews of The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
"0 stars if I could.... We noticed a lump in our puppy’s throat and brought her to our vet to have it checked out. They aspirated the mass and sent it to the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab for analysis. University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab labeled it as “mesenchymal neoplasia, likely sarcoma,” and stated, “the morphology of the neoplastic cells is most consistent with soft tissue sarcoma (i.e. peripheral nerve sheath tumor, hemangiopericytoma, Fibrosarcorna, etc.), though other sarcoma types should also be considered.” We were heartbroken. Our puppy was only 10 months old. We proceeded with testing and surgery, costing us nearly $1,400. It didn’t help that her recovery was hell. She barked for hours at a time once the anesthetic wore off and we couldn’t tell if it was due to pain or itching. Her surgery site filled with fluid (seroma) repetitively. We had to take her to get it drained over and over. Imagine restricting a 10-month old puppy’s movement and play: she was miserable. We were miserable watching her suffer. Once the mass was biopsied by another lab, we found out it was a hematoma. Then, we realized that we put our puppy through unnecessary surgery because of the report from the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. So we reached out to our vet and the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab with a letter asking for financial restitution. The entire ordeal cost us nearly $1,400 in labs, surgery costs, and medication. We didn’t ask for anything for the time off work or the weeks of hell we went through. Our vet served as a mediator for us and the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab for a while, and reached out to the lab that dissected the mass when we got the results. Per our request, Dr. Anne Barger, assistant director of the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, finally called us. She talked over me and argued the diagnosis. She informed me that she doesn’t believe or trust the results from lab that dissected the mass. Then we were on the phone with Dr. Rick Fredrickson, director of the lab, who talked over us in medical jargon. We listened to him blame everyone, ourselves included, except his department, and end with a final statement that it’s really no ones fault. We had the displeasure of dealing with two people who had no sympathy for the pain caused by their department. It made us realize that the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab cares more about money and being right than the lives of the pets they are supposed to be treating. But when we really got down to it, it’s the fact that we ended the interaction feeling the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab shouldn’t be trusted with the lives of our pets. Fur babies are family and if they can’t tell the difference between a hematoma (blood under the skin, like a bruise) and sarcoma (aggressive, malignant cancer), I will never trust them again to diagnose our pets and I strongly recommend that you shouldn’t trust them to diagnose or take care of yours either. I can’t change what my family went through because of the University of Illinois’ Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, but I hope that by sharing our story, by sharing our pain, that I can save you and your family from going through the same thing in the future. I hope that I can save you from making the same mistake I did of trusting the wrong people."
