Reviews of Dongan Oak Monument
"Amazing slice of American History nestled inside Prospect Park! The story behind this site needs to be told in more detail. Long Live the Maryland 400!"
"Confusing sign, fails to accurately explain history or its impact. Unclear were this tree is/was and needs a picture depicting what it’s talking about. Don’t go out of your way for this one. BORING! #whitehistory"
"An important part of our history. But I wish there were more info on the actual positions of the oak and era roads. As it relates to present day roads. Where EXACTLY was the Porte road? The valley grove road? And from where they relate to the monument? I want to put myself as close to those stated locations, as in the day of the fight in 1776, as possible."
"Perfectly clean monument surrounded by the beauty of Prospect Park."
"Stroll west of Prospect Park Zoo and admire The Dongan Oak Monument. It's origins remains a tree of terrific size at least a hundred years old by the time Washington’s army took this area, now known as Battle Pass. By cutting down this tree, the Americans were able to hold off the British until they were cut off from behind and had to flee. This monument was installed in 1922 with a noble eagle atop it. It consists of a bronze eagle mounted on a granite pedestal inscribed with dedicatory text. The sculptor of the original eagle was Frederick W. Ruckstull (1853–1942).The eagle has actually been stolen and replaced twice since then, perhaps by British people. Visit. ****"
