Dundas Castle
609 Craigie Clair Road, Roscoe, New York, United States
About the Dundas Castle
Dundas Castle, also known as Craig-e-Clair, is a stunning neo-Gothic house located at 609 Craigie Clair Road in Roscoe, New York. Built between 1910 and 1924 for Ralph Wurts-Dundas, this historic castle is a testament to grandeur and architectural excellence.
Originally part of the Catskill Mountains landscape, Dundas Castle was constructed on the grounds of the former Beaverkill Lodge, a summer retreat owned by New York architect Bradford Gilbert. The castle's name, Craig-e-Clair, meaning "beautiful mountainside," was inspired by Gilbert's wife Maria, who found the area reminiscent of her homeland in Ireland.
Ralph Wurts-Dundas, a wealthy New Yorker and descendant of the builders of the Delaware & Hudson Canal, spared no expense in creating his dream castle. Imported materials from England, France, and Italy were used in the construction, with only local stone from the Beaverkill River being sourced nearby.
The 36-room castle, designed in the Gothic Revival and Elizabethan Revival styles, was never fully completed or occupied by Dundas himself, as he passed away in 1921. The property was later sold to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the Masonic Order, who transformed it into a vacation retreat and summer camp for inner-city youth.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, Dundas Castle remains a symbol of architectural splendor and historical significance. With a conservation easement in place to protect its heritage, the castle continues to enchant visitors with its timeless beauty and rich history.
